Getting rid of old 'big' clothes - motivation or hubris?

I'm some way along my weight loss now, and am moving back into some of the clothes I used to be able to fit into - a relief, as I was worried that might never happen.
What should I do with the larger clothes? Trousers that fall down without a belt, and so on?
Of course it would feel great to clear them out, but it might be tempting fate, and perhaps even foolish: if I'm stuck in a bad run of work and put on a couple of inches, I'll be right back to feeling my clothes pinch me, and picking up cheap, big replacements in a rush.
Yet not having a big alternative could also be a great motivator to make sure that never happens! What would you do?

I've kept one pair of jeans I used to fit into (the ones in my picture actually) so that I can remind myself where I've come from.
The others I've all got rid of, I like having clothes that fit me, and it's good motivation not to put weight back on because I'd have nothing to wear!
Never think about 'tempting fate'. You've made it this far, there's no going back now unless you give up. And why would you want to do that?!
Have a clear out. Treat yourself to some new, fitted clothes. And feel good about yourself.0 -
Get rid of them. When your clothes start to feel a little tight then you know you have to get back with the program. Much easier to lose 10 or 15 lbs than it is to lose 50. If you get back into "comfy" loose fitting clothes again it will be easier to just continue to gain. Experience speaking here.0

DITTO- Get rid of them. Don't make the mistake of pulling out the comfort pants when the others get tight. I have done that and it is not good. It also feels good to see them in the trash or donated clothing bin.0

Think that's settled then: all going to charity / recycling - apart from a token pair of 'never forget the horror' trousers!0

I personally just donated 3 garbage bags full of clothes! I figured no point keeping them I don't plan on ever gaining my weight back! I've kept a few pairs of jeans and a shirt just for motivation and to see how far I've come!0

As another note, depending on the size change you could get them tailored.
I plan on taking my favorite dresses in along the way. It's cheaper than buying a new dress and it will fit me perfectly!0 -
Motivation. If you keep looking back (having fat clothes), you'll find excuses to gain an little here and there.
Do the opposite. Buy nice smaller sized clothes that you'll aim to fit into.0 -
Get rid of them. Unless you want to keep one pair as a "look how far I've come" memento.
I feel it's sabotaging yourself if you keep old clothes on the off chance you gain the weight back. It would be too easy to pull them out of the closet and start wearing them again if you do.0 -
I just recycled my old fat jeans because I don't plan to need them again. Went out and got some fitter jeans at Goodwill because I plan to wear them for a short while until I downsize again. Call it hubris but I call it believing in myself.0

I save clothes that are one size too big. Everything else goes.0

Same, I have a couple of ultra favorite and I don't want to lose them.
I find that thrift shops only ever have tiny sizes for sale, so I will feel really good when I donate my 12s to them. I know there are ladies out there in need of my work clothes especially. Soon!!!
