Hi all, my name is heather and slowly over the last 10 years I have gained a lot of weight. I'm currently at 230 and not feeling very motivated but I know I need to make a change. I'm 5'9 so as a first goal, I'd like to get under 200.

Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle! I was looking at the add exercise tab and found that even a short, slow ride burns a lot of calories. It can be really fun and there are tons of groups, clubs, and teams that you can find to ride with.
Good luck!0 -
And if the above suggestion of bicycle is too intimidating for you, just walk! Walk slow, walk fast, just walk. You won't believe how it will change your mindset once it becomes a habit. You'll find you don't want to miss one day! (Believe me, this coming from someone who hadn't "exercised" in a long time)
Find what works for you and there you'll find your motivation!0 -

I second this! I'm 5'10" and started in Feb 2014 at 191. I told myself I was just going to walk for 20-30min 3x a week and it made me feel so much better that I started increasing from there. I'm down over 30lbs and love my exercise so much now that I workout 5-6x a week now from 45-90 minutes. It's my time for meEven when I have cheat days or go over, I still always exercise.
Biggest advice is to start slow and small and build your momentum from there. Like you said, you didn't put the weight on overnight and can't expect it to come off overnight. If you make small sustainable changes a habit then you will succeed. Best of luck!0 -
Thank you so much. I hate exercise but I joined a gym and going today. I appreciate the support.0

Being here and publicly announcing the intention is a good start. I haven't been on MFP very long, but it does seem like a supportive and friendly environment. If you need support, you'll find it here. If you need an occasional kick in the [buttocks], you can probably find that here, too. Boldly on!0
