Hi guys, I leave a pretty busy and somewhat stressful life. I am a father of two beautiful girls, I work full time (45hrs a week) and I am also attending school (9 units) I have a gym membership which if am lucky, I attend 3 times during the week. Sometimes, when getting off work/school makes me want to go for a beer or two. I love beer but I know that it will increase my calorie and carbs intake. What Would be a reasonable amount of beer/alcohol consumption a week? Would one rather drink beer, tequila, vodka or whiskey? Thanks

As much as you can fit in without going over your goals.

I prefer beer or red wine myself.

Drink what you love in moderation. I save the good stuff for a night out and drink Mich Ultra during the week. We have to be happy doing this, or we'll stop doing it ...

It all depends on your personal preferences and what your "end game" is. If you're looking to get a decent buzz, stick to a vodka soda. If you love beer, then have beer but be smart about it. My beloved craft beers are double the calories of any regular lite beer.

As far as reasonable consumption goes, just make sure your alcohol consumption isn't dramatically setting back your fitness goals.

I am a beer lover myself. I brewed some awesome beers for a few years until my little girl came along and stole all of my spare time away haha. Anyways, I believe what the others are saying here too. I think I can still enjoy what I like in this world, but at least there's ways I can keep track of what I do and not let it run me off track. I still want to be healthy, and I still want to stay in shape and have energy to chase my kiddo around, but I still love my little vices. So, I'll drink a couple lighter beers through the week and leave the good stuff to moderation. But we gotta be honest about it. If we're not making progress or holding steady with where we want to be, then changes can be made. You know, like cutting out butter or cake or ice cream......Anything but Beer!
  • Drink what you like the most. Just keep it within your calorie limit for the day.

A lot of good replies! Thanks. And ugh, i love IPAs but as @notnikkisixx states, the calorie count on them are twice as much. Thanks @Mojohusker. And thank you all! Is it five o' clock yet?

Vodka is going to be better for the waist line, but if you want a beer....get a beer. Just moderation.

Moderation is key. Work it into your calorie goals and enjoy. But if you're having more than a couple, you will find them hard to work into your calories.

The good news is, as you lose weight, you'll need less alcohol to get the same buzzed effect.

I like to have a Guinness and it is only a few more calories than a light beer and I feel much more filling.

Amen to that!!! When I drink beer I make sure I'm drinking a good beer that I love, I drink in moderation, and I never ever regret it. You will never catch me with a diet beer! Give me something dark with a good head and I'm a happy camper!!

The "best" alcoholic beverage choice really depends on WHY you're drinking. If you're choosing to have one or two beers just because you like the taste then beer is a fine choice every once in a while. If you're drinking to get a buzz then shots of liquor will get you where you want to be for the least number of calories.

Guinness is a good lower calorie option plus it's tasty

Personally I've found that, since I've started losing weight, my calories are far more precious to me than they used to be, so I'm much choosier about how I spend them.

In other words, I'd rather spend a few more calories on really good beer less often, rather than fewer calories on light watered-down commercial beer more often.

This doesn't only apply to beer, but to pretty much everything. These days I opt for the best cheese, chocolate, olive oil... basically I've turned into a food snob. I may not be eating as much, but I'm certainly enjoying what I eat a lot more.

I'm pretty active and most days can easily drink a solid craft beer or glass of wine without even going near my recommended TDEE calories for the day. That being said, I'll indulge, usually in good beers.

In terms of calorie content, Lagers are usually low calorie. I go for craft lagers personally but not often (I prefer IPAs and belgian style ales). I believe that New Belgium's Shift is lower than 150 calories, but not 100%. It is a light lager.

I had a nice Latin Style Witbier from 5 Rabbits called 5 Lizard. It is slightly fruity, very light, a great summer/warm weather beer. I think it was around 130 so a pretty light choice.
