i am 71 years old. So discouraged with this weight loss journey. For the last 4 years I have done nothing but go up and down. I am trying to keep my calorie goal at 1200 calories. I have gotten back to walking at the walking track , but have to use a Walker in order to do this. I average about 21/2 miles a day at least 4 times a week. I am so discouraged . I just seem to be stuck. Am I eating enough or too much? Before I broke my hip 5 years ago I had lost 85 lbs. Now I have 35 of that to loose again. I also during this time was a 24 hour caregiver for my mom who is now 94. Very hard to concentrate on yourself. She is in assisted living now but I still go there every other day to see what she needs. I just don't know what I am doing wrong.

Hi. You had to re-prioritize your energy and spend it on your mom. You didn't do anything wrong. Also, since you lost 85 pounds before, you know you have the will power and the ability to lose this 35 that have crept back in. My understanding is that we lose muscle mass as we age, and one of the best ways to lose weight is to replace that lost muscle mass. Is it possible for you to incorporate some strength training in your routine a few days per week? I believe there are exercised you can do that do not even require weights nor going to gym. You just use your own body weight ( eg planks, push ups etc). A professional should show you the best exercises since you have an injury. Speaking of which, do you have access to a pool? I wonder if water walking or water aerobics would be better for your hip? It is great resistance work out and gentle on the joints. Good luck in your journey. You have already demonstrated that you can be successful. That is half the battle. All the best. Susan

At age 71 your metabolism is slower. Try light weight lifting to sped it up. Monday's arms, Tuesday's legs, Wednesday's arms again..... And add additional produce to get your calorie count down to 1100 calories per day. Big plates of fresh produce look better than little plates of breads/meats.

Perhaps your challenge is being consistent so that your trend continues downwards.
Losing weight is straightforward, so keep it simple and have a clear plan and mindset to get you through. Its good you are doing the exercise, but your first priority is to calculate and record an accurate deficit.

If you want to consistently lose, then you need to have consistent deficits.
Have a look at the sexy pants thread and confirm you understand what it is you are trying to achieve.
