Cannot find unstarred banana entry anymore?

I'm sure this isn't the right forum for it, but I know it's the fastest moving one.
I had deleted my account and recently signed back up. I lost all my most often used foods, including bananas. I've searched every permutation of banana, bananas, fresh, raw, hyphenated, not hyphenated and I cannot find the USDA, non-asterisked version of it. I just get long strings of "Generic - Bananas - Raw".
If someone can link me to the database entry/give me exact search terms, I'd be grateful. I've even gone so far as to search for it through google.
Please, for the love of all things bananas, help me.

fruit - Banana, peeled, raw try this...it still has the star but lots of confirmations and is in grams.0

Use one with a star.0
-
Look up banana-usda and you should find something to use. Don't worry about the stars, look for confirmations instead. The star just means that a user entered it. Confirmations mean that another user looked up the information and found it to be correct.0

Yes, I understand the point of the asterisks. I just prefer not to use them.Liftng4Lis wrote: »Use one with a star.

OP, yes, it's gone. I don't know what they do with the database honestly. Just use a usda entry.0 -

At some point we lost onions, olive oil and other things too... I don't get it...
Seriously?! I'm kind of scared to check now. It used to be so easy and it would almost always be at the top. That really sucks for returning members who were used to being able to find this stuff easily.0 -
Who cares if they have an asterisk or not? I find one and check the confirmations. If there are few confirmations I go on to the next one and if there are 5 or more I use it. If I have a little time, I will check the info against the USDA database and, if it is correct, will confirm it myself and use it. Life's too short to get all up in arms about a little star when it really doesn't make a difference.
On the other hand, the database really needs cleaning up. They need to import the entire USDA database, keep brand name entries, and dump all of the duplicates.

I just find one by typing in usda and then go back and make sure it's correct by looking at the usda website. So far, not had a issue.0

It's only been like that for a few days for me. It seems several of the unstarred entries have vanished. Maybe some kind of tech issue?0

I have sent up the red flag about two of the non-asterisked items: "Garlic - Raw" and "Bananas - Raw" and Olivia has posted that they are working to restore those. In the interim, I have placed the entries in my public Food Diary Lunch for today and the next few days. You can use the Quick Tools to copy those items to your Food Diary.0

That's very kind of you, thank you!0 -
there is a chrome app you can use that lets you chose to look at only non user submitted entries and for only ones with confirmations. i also use the one that gives me a nutritional pie graph at the end of my diary just like you can use on the phone app.

You say "life's too short," but that's just why so many people bemoan the loss of the dependable no-star entries (and the difficulty of finding them even when they are there), because they saved so much time.
Life's too short to spend it having to check info against the USDA database for 15 or more items a day, depending on how much I'm cooking from scratch that day and how recently I've used that particular item. (If it's not still in my recent foods, I have to check entries--and usually it means checking at least three or four entries to find one that's right--again because there's no way to tell which entry you used last time, unless you edit one just for the sake of making it one of "your" foods so it will show up at the top of the search list next time.) Plus, for accuracy in logging I like to use entries for whole foods that are in grams, and so many of the user-entered foods are for things like "1 cup, chopped" or, worse, "1 bowl" or "1 plate" or "1 serving."
Foods have disappeared from "my frequent foods" as well. "Coffee, brewed from grounds" (I was logging it for the potassium) had been my number one most frequent food overall and for most meals for more than a year, and it just disappeared from the list entirely one day late last fall. Then the same thing happened with "oil, olive."
OP, it won't help you since you deleted your account, but for others, one thing you can do to find entries that have disappeared from the database is go to "full reports" (the link is below the water consumption and food notes on your food diary page, if you're using the website) and set the dates to search back for a couple of months, or however long ago it was when you used it last. Then when you know what date it was, you can go to that date in your diary and use quick tools to copy the meal (which then means you have to delete any other food in that meal that you're not eating today, but I find this sometimes is a way to address foods that disappear from the database).
Sometimes, if I have time when I get home from the grocery store or farmer's market, or when I'm planning meals, I'll look up entries for anything I think I won't find under my "recent" and "frequent" tabs, add them to the next day, and then keep copying them to the following day each evening until I actually use them.0 -
If you have used it before, it will probably be in one of your tabs. That's what I have been doing because I could not find it anymore either.0
-
It's one thing if a feature never existed, but it really pisses me off when they break stuff that used to work. They fix a lot of issues once they are reported and given enough time. But others, not so much0
-
I was just trying to add stuff in that I know was there before, like a reliable entry for green d'anjou pears ... The best one I found only had like 2 or 3 conformations. It's really strange and frustrating to be honest.0
-
C'mon, MFP, let us eat bananas!0
-
You used to be able to sort the results and that option isn't there any more either. It's unfortunate the forums and the database are both less functional now than when I joined. I guess the site has so much traffic and referrals there's no incentive to keep features if there's a cheaper/easier option available.0
-
the chrome extension makes it really easy to weed out user contributed items and ones with no confirmations. wouldnt help on the phone app but its something at least.0
