How does the MFP barcode scanner work?

Just curious! I'm in Korea right now and each time I use MFP to scan Korean brand foods, the name comes up in Korean with the right calorie figure attached. Does MFP have access to a giant global database of calories or what?

    Yeah, I'm on vacation in the Netherlands and the barcodes are coming up accurate too. It always pays to double check it against the nutritional info on the pack though, as I've stumbled across a few barcodes where people have entered incorrect info in the past.
