Can't complete entry

good morning. I am eating 5 times a day (easing into paleo) and the app won't let me complete my entry because I didn't consume enough calories. So my big question is.....am I harming my weight loss by not eating enough (according to app). I'm not hungry throughout the day and feel like I have a normal amount of energy. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't understand what you mean by not being able to complete the entry. Even on my low cal--900--days, I can always "complete this entry." I get a lecture from MFP, but I can complete it without any issue.

I just tried it again. I see what you mean now. My entry is complete, but it warns me. My question is....am I doing this right to loose weight. Or do I need to eat more to loose weight?

If you're eating like that little every day, it may not hurt your weight loss, but it will hurt your health in the long run. If it happens once in a while -everyone has days they are hungry or not hungry-, it's not a big deal

It won't hurt your weight loss, but if you continue eating that amount it can cause serious health issues (muscle loss, hair loss, exhaustion, the list goes on). Add in calorie dense items (oils, nuts, nut butters, dairy items, avocados, beans) to bring your total up. You're meant to hit the goal MFP gives you.

You should aim to at least eat to your goal without dipping into the exercise calories. If you continue daily like this, after a few days you will start feeling exhausted and weak. I did the same thing when I started and got to the point where I could barely put effort into my cardio workouts.

The recommended minimum for men is 1500. I would say you should try to net at LEAST that many on a regular basis.

For women it's 1200. Yesterday my net was around 700, but I consumed around 1600 and burned a whole bunch thanks to running 8 miles and getting some walking in. Generally my net is closer to 1200. I'm also a little bit of a thing so I don't need as many calories to keep things running.

It won't hurt your weight loss, but it will harm your vitamin intake. Make sure you eat enough for nutrients so you don't make yourself sick later on in life.

Experiment and see what works for you.

I tend to think that if you are doing this occasionally, it's not a big deal. On most days though, you should be eating a bit more.

I eat low carb and don't even put in entries anymore, but when i did there were days I was over and days where I was way under. If you are doing a low calorie diet I believe you need to be pretty close to the calorie goal, but with low carb type diets you'll have days that you aren't even close. As long as you are eating when you are ok, you should be ok. If you aren't eating and you are hungry you will end up hurting your weight loss

Why does eating having to be so frustrating. My family is all obese and I refuse to become a statistic. I'm in the army and today I got weighed and taped, I passed with the best body fat % I have had in years. I have a feeling I'm on the right track. I just need nutritional guidance. I don't know how to eat more healthy calories. I eat breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner. Do I just eat more quantity during those times or eat more often. Sorry if this is a rant.

You're a guy AND you only have 22 pounds to go.

Up that calorie goal and set you weight loss to about a half pound a week. You're not doing your health any good netting 900 calories.

You're getting lots of protein, you had lots of variety so lots of micronutrients, your intake is fine, especially if you have weight to lose.

The "Step" adjustment is totally ignorable, it's just MFP being MFP.

Doesn't matter how often you eat in terms of weight loss, but if you find it easier to hit your goal by eating more often, then eat more often. More quantity of what you're already eating will work. Or you could add in some calorie-dense foods as mentioned earlier.

And you're still a statistic - you're just a statistic in the healthy weight category. We're all just statistics :P

If that is the eating schedule you like, eat some more calorie dense foods- peanut butter, avocado, higher fat fish, red meat, nuts, rice, and the list goes on.

Actually, netting 900 calories is not enough to fuel is body properly, especially since he's doing some type of strenuous exercise to burn 400 plus calories.

Yes...eat more at your meal or eat more snacks. Have some whole grain toast with your eggs. Have a cookie. Eat a larger serving of nuts. Eat peanut butter.

Assuming he really burned 400+ calories, which is probably a pretty big assumption.

I doubt I really burned 1,286 calories walking for six miles or in 12,454 steps, for example.

So, you are using yourself as an example? That is quite a calorie burn, which I presume came from your fitbit?

How are you counting your exercise calories? MFP and even the calorie counters on cardio machines are notorious for overestimating. If you start eating back all your "exercise calories" you may eat more than you intend.

Yes, I'm using myself as an example of someone whose exercise calories -- in my case from UP24, MapMyFitness, and MFP -- bear scant relation to reality such it might not be realistic to categorize the exercise as strenuous or to eat back, if one were so inclined, more than 1/4 to 1/3.

A "Step adjustment" of 400 calories is nowhere near the same as burning 400 in a Crossfit WOD or running 5k.

If he feels fine, he's fine.

    Not necessarily.

    Very few things are "necessarily".

But that doesn't mean some things aren't far more likely than others.
