You can oven bake onion rings, they aren't as amazing, but they'll do. A couple of brands of frozen ones (crumbed, not battered) are pretty good oven baked. i get the ones from Aldi.

As for ice cream, you'll never convince me there is a good substitute, just the best quality I can get, in an amount that suits my goals.

I have to agree with this. Personally I hate "substitutes" for anything. I either eat the real thing, or I go without. "Fake" ice cream, or baked onion rings simply won't satisfy the craving for those items. Better to just make it fit in your day than to eat something that's only kinda sorta like what you really want

Just eat fewer/smaller portions of each.

If I could still eat onion rings, I'd have to have them in all their greasy glory. I'd just eat less of them. Eat them slowly, one little bite at a time, chewing thoroughly and really savoring each morsel.

I do the same with real ice cream. I have a small portion of quality ice cream and savor it.

I only do the oven baked onion rings because they're very much like the ones from Hungry Jacks/Burger King, which I loved as a kid :) nothing like "real" onion rings, but they're one of those flavours I still like ;)

I reckon I'd give the combo a go.... I already dip fries /chips in to icecream

I've never made an onion ring, but could you crumb and bake instead of flying in batter?

I'm happiest if I buy ice cream sandwiches. I can eat one sandwich, at about 150 calories or less, and be perfectly satisfied. If I put 150 calories of ice cream in a bowl or cup, it looks tiny and pathetic.

I agree with try baked onion rings and find the highest quality ice cream you can but eat smaller portions of it.

Panko breaded baked onion rings are good. I also like to deep fry onions without any breading at all.

I'm not a huge ice cream fan and have always prefered low-fat so I that's what I go for on the occasions that I want some.

i dont' like ice cream but onion rings??? OMG! LOVE LOVE LOVE.
personally i wouldn't eat them if they were made "healthy"
i would rather save my calories and have one big pile of them at the end of the day, say 1400 calories worth! LOL
    :p

I thought about crushing up some corn flakes and dipping onion rings into some egg and corn flakes and baking them

I'd go with panko crumbs instead, they are lovely and crispy.

Less onion rings and ice cream. I love both btw
I've found that if I make "healthy" versions of things I'll just overeat it and still be craving the real thing.

For the onion rings just leave off the batter and don't fry them.
