I'm visiting friends Memorial Day weekend and I know there is going to be a lot of junk food and beer. I am going to try to make the healthiest choices possible but I might want to indulge a bit as well. Is it okay to get off track on certain holiday weekends or when I'm visiting friends? Thanks

That's a hard one. Try to stay on track as much as possible. Keep logging in on mfp even if you stray a little. Have those friends go for a walk with you then you can still get some exercise in and visit at the same time. If you get off track, get right back on after your visit.
    Have fun!

Personally, I like indulging from time to time. Otherwise I start to feel deprived and will not stick with it. When I let myself have a treat now and then it makes this lifestyle so much easier. Life happens and you have to roll with it. No one is going to make good choices 100% of the time. Just have a good weekend and enjoy it but try not to OVER do it. Get back on it when it's done and I think you'll be fine!

:noway: my opinion, & I hope i dont ruffle any feathers..it is unsupportive to say "Yes its okay to go off the wagon".... it is not okay to go off the wagon. this journey is about self discipline, self control, and determination to fight temptations.

I don't know where you are in your progress... my advice, prepare now for your game plan for your Memorial day weekend. Fill up on water, fruits, veggies, etc... steer clear of the things you know is not on your plan.

Imagine the satisfaction you will have, inside of yourself, to Face all of those temptations, and come home ,weigh in, and see a loss.

This is a challenge for you. Mentally. Take on this challenge, and Beat it !!!

just my supportive opinion of course

Depends on your goals, your personality, your ability to get back on track...

I'll be camping out on the beach with friends that weekend, and you can be damn sure I'm having some beers and dipping my crab in tons of butter.

You're an adult, you can do whatever you want to! But honestly, If you can do it every once in a while I don't see what the problem would be, just remember that with the beer and fried foods you may be bloated the next couple of days. Personally for me though, I can't because I know how I will be ---> first it's memorial day, then It's a friends brithday, then it's payday, and all of a sudden it snowballs into I am celebrating it being Monday!! Like somehow I didn't know it was coming right behind Sunday!! lol! But again, it's up to you and if you have the self control to stop it at only the one day.

I go off track now and again, but I log it all in my fitness pal. This way I can see how far off track i went, and hold myself accountable. It usually keeps me from indulging AGAIN the next day.

My concern wasn't really about having self discipline. I have been a competitive athlete and have been training for my whole life. My main concern about the food was that I am going to be 10 hours away from home, with not many local grocery stores, or places to keep the food that I buy special for my diet.

    HotonIce,

It is only one day, one weekend. If you've been working out hard and following your diet diligently, you deserve a break. Psychologists say after doing something that requires scarifice a person should reward themselves.

So if you've been a good little ice skater and practicing and following your diet strictly have a good weekend and chilllax a bit and enjoy the day! You deserve it and THEN use the fact that you indulged and might of strayed slightly as motivation when you get back into the gym and workout hard and then follow your diet strictly.

Take the day off and enjoy yourself! It's memorial day thank a vet for their service to this country!

Sometimes I set a "penality" for myself, saying ok if I go out for dinner to one of my favorite places and have a margrita. I have to do an extra 10 miniutes on the stationary bike(my personel nemisis) three days next week.

You should see what i do to myself if I miss a workout or have bad time manangement, DAMN I'm mean! (To myself!)

Good luck on the ice and your goals!

just my opinon here. I would not want to go off my diet...much. I would make the good choices, and maybe have a little smidge of something bad. There is no way i would just go for broke, for the whole party, or day. The couple of times that i did in the past, even when i cheated just a little, it took me a whole week to re-lose the pound or 1.5 that i gained for the binge.
Not worth it to me. But to each their own.

 I have found such extreme satisfaction in my ability to 'choose' in a crowd. I didnt think I had it in me...it was amazing. In the face of others eating what they want and what is NOT on my plan, I drank my water, ate my apple and enjoying the feeling of being bigger then all of that for the first time. On my birthday everyone eating cake and icecream and burgers and fries and all that and I made a choice (and didnt feel left out at all) I ate half of a sirloin burger, no bun. 3 french fries (yes I counted) I ate my salad and enjoyed watching little boys enjoy the food around them. I treated myself to half of a cupcake for my birthday. It was the most awesome feeling.

of course, it is your personal choice but I know that I have to stay straight or I will fall off and I have worked too hard for that. Someone once said 'nothing tastes as good as thin feels'. I love that! I think there is balance. We all just have to find it for ourselves.
