If you are drinking red wine and staying under your calorie goal is it okay to have a couple glasses a night?

You will get various responses to this question. I will tell you what my trainer says.....no alcohol. I don't listen to him :-) but that is what he says.0

I don't see why not. :-)0

EVERY night?!!
On some nights, sure. Every night? No. Wine is empty calories so you're body is getting nothing from it.
ETA: That was the hardest thing for me to do was cut my glass of wine from almost every night of the week, to once a week.0 -

My motto is everything moderation! Besides, the doctors say red wine (again, in moderation) is good for your health! I say go for it! Life's too short to give up all the good stuff. :drinker:0

What...are you going to live your life without really LIVING it?! I would hate to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else live theirs. OR look back and see what I've missed. This doesn't only apply to the OP's question, but to many areas of life. As long as you are meeting YOUR goals, I say go for it!0

A glass or 2 of Red Wine is good for your heart and is perfectly fine :flowerforyou:0

I had a hard time giving mine up every night but I figure you have to sacrifice something to get what you want in life, so I did....during the week only, not on the weekends!:bigsmile:0

Wine is completely empty calories I was drinking a glass (or two!) every night and even though I was staying under my calories, I noticed a big difference when I started limiting myself to 1 glass 2-3 nights a week. I substituted carbonated water, juice, or soy milk with dinner on the other days so it still feels like I am drinking something with dinner.0

I'm sure it's wrong, but I plan my calories around my 1-2 glasses of wine most nights. I know my body gets enough nutrition from food and I know I should cut back because of the empty calories but if I'm not going to eat my ice cream, chocolate, popcorn, drink my beer, have a greasy hamburger, etc. then I am going to have a glass of wine :drinker:0

A little bit red wine is good for you which by definition makes it not empty calories.0

I'd stop at one rather than springing for two. It has very real health benefits because of the antioxidants ... so it's not truly empty calories. However, alcohol does slow down your metabolism and causes bloating/water retention in some people (like me!). So my goal is to have a glass of red wine maybe a couple of times a week, but not every night, and I try very hard never to have more than one. (Key word: try.)0

im afraid i would say no, limit yourself to 3 glasses a week including weekends. and only 1 per night e.g 1 on Monday, 1 on Friday, 1 on Saturday.
if your looking for weight loss, cut it out completely and just wait for the difference, the pounds will literally fall off!!0 -
the recommendation for heart healthy is one glass red wine for females and 2 glasses for men a day. Sorry ladies:drinker:0

Doctors say that drinking a glass or two of alcohol/wine can be good for you. I try to limit it to once maybe twice a week. My doctor also told me that drinking two or more drinks daily increases your risk of breast cancer also. You just can't win. Just live your life because who knows what will happen tomorrow.0

I have to disagree about this comment. There are literally hundreds of studies and articles written on the health benefits of wine! Of course all in moderation...1-2 glasses a night is a bit over-indulging...
My suggestion is to look for lighter wines. Dry reds and whites...even a few blushes are lower in sugar content. If you love wine (and who doesn't?) just do a little homework...
In the meantime...Cheers!

Nutritionally - alcohol is empty calories, but it is also a nutrient blocker. You can prevent your body from absorbing all of the nutrients from your foods.....
But someone on here said it best, are you really going to live your life without really living it? I agree, if you want you're glass of wine each night, then plan around it with your calories.0 -

Actually that was disproven! It's been shown that the assumption wine was good for you was more of a case of the logical fallacy that correlation = causation. What was actually the truth is that one glass of wine every couple of days is more indicative of an individual that naturally exercises moderation and willpower and that they did it in every aspect of their lives (including drinking). It was a symptom not the diagnosis.
I'm of the belief that if you have the calories do it. Moderation is key in being healthy though. Don't deprive yourself of something you love, just be smart about how often and how much you choose to indulge0 -
I usually have a glass after dinner 3-5 times a week. Especially if I ate a high fiber meal cause it seems to help the digestion. But maybe that's the thing I need to give up to reach my goal. I'm eight pounds away and haven't lost a pound in a month. Thanks everyone0

That doesn't make any sense. I assume by nutrients you mean carbs, proteins, fats, etc? If alcohol blocked nutrient absorbtion then all those things that have calories attached to them (because calories are not their own entities, they are part of the nutrients we process) then we could drink alcohol and be effectively blocking calories as well.
Am I misunderstanding? Can you explain what you are saying more clearly?0 -
I love your signature. What a great motivator!0

My problem with drinking is the next day I have a harder time controlling the urge to go to McDonalds for the 2 cheeseburger meal deal!0

In moderation there are very few things that will be truly detrimental as long as the majority of your diet is healthy. I have a little bit of alcohol almost every night. I'm strong, healthy, and my weight loss is progressing very well.0

I meant the vitamins and minerals that we absorb through our foods (not the macronutrients - carbs, proteins, fats) i'm sorry, I should have explained more thoroughly.0 -
have a glass now and again..dont let it make up more than 10-15% of your caloric intake...otherwise you are depriving your body of what it needs to build muscle, prvide energy etc. drinking calories is a total waste. Try to not make a habit of it....we all need to cut loose once in a while...but I have to admit that nothing knocks me off the wagon faster than the munchies brought on my alcohol.0
