@Stoshew71 - I completely agree with you and skippygirlsmom and others. I love the running community! I have always found it to be encouraging no matter what your goals and fitness levels are. We all have our personal goals that are not dependent on or lessened by anothers goals.

@_nikkiwolf_ - Whoo-hoo! Go have fun and enjoy your first race!

@SBRRepeat - It always amazes me how a run can change my mood (for the better!). I know we all joke about running being our "therapy" but there is a lot of truth in it. I am sorry you had such a rough day though!

@SonicDeathMonkey80 - OMG that is a hysterical 1st race story! Very few people can say they finished 1st and last in a race! I am curious about an indoor 5K though - was it just laps on an indoor track? If so that is a ton of laps!

@skippygirlsmom Thanks for the encouragement! flowersmh.gif

I don't know why I the idea of signing up for a race makes me hesitate so much. Well, maybe because when we had to run in school I always came in last, no matter how hard I tried, and got a "barely sufficient" rating from the teacher... At least now, if I finish last in a race, I guess I still get a medal instead of depressing comments, right? Plus as my first race it would be guaranteed to be a PR :)

So I've decided togive it a try. I just spent the last ~2 hours looking for 5k races that are not too far away and at a day where I have time - and I actually found one just next Sunday! I signed up right away before I get a chance to change my mind, and now I'm super excited!
Now I have to go and read all the "how to prepare for your first race" postings I can find. ^^

FANTASTIC!!!!!! I'm so proud of you, this is so awesome. Once you do one you'll want to do more. You'll also meet some of the greatest people. We have "friends" we only see at races and it's always a big hug when we see them. The racing community is fantastic. I'm so excited for you. I need an icon of someone jumping up and down!

    @shanaber love the new picture!
@sonicdeathmonkey80 OMG you make me laugh
reporter: where did you finish in your first 5K
SDM80: well I finished first.... and last

@honunui what a great video and picture. I just love seeing them
@stoshew71 yeah Brandon and Josh they are amazing. Like holy crap fast.
@_nikkiwolf_ I would give the same advice as some of the others, don't go out too fast, don't change a thing from your training, don't wear anything new, don't eat anything you don't normally eat before a race, change nothing. The best advice is smile and have fun. Oh and you'll have to get "how to look freaking like a model when you run tips" from sonicdeathmonkey80 he seriously looks like he stepped out of runners world magazine when he runs. Seriously you'll be amazed how easily you'll shave a time off your mile in a race.

Rest day for me so I am sucking it up and just reading about all your runs and enjoying the pictures! It is warm and very windy here so probably just as well!

@HonuNui - love the octopus picture and video! Just awesome!
    @jtarmom - Happy Birthday!!
    @SonicDeathMonkey80 - love your 1st race story!
@csman49 - take it easy getting back to running. As you feel better your runs will feel better and your pace will improve again! Hang in there!
@Stoshew71 - You are so right! I have rarely met runners who are unfriendly (1 or 2 yes) by and large they have all been so encouraging and welcoming at all levels. It makes it so nice to be able to say that I am part of that community.
@briebee7 - which half are you doing? I am doing La Jolla that weekend.
@skippygirlsmom - I love OneMoreMile - have a magnet on my car from them that says ' I know I run like a girl - try to keep up' :)

I think it is possible, but it is also not wise to set out to do so on all of your training runs. Keep your easy runs easy. My easy pace is a good 2-3 minutes above my 5k PR. Running fast all the time is a recipe for burn out, and in a race it can be a disaster.
Don't worry, I don't try to run fast all the time - when I think I will be able to sqeeze in four runs in a week, I try to make one of them a "tempo run". Most of the time I'm much lazier and enjoy running slow ;)

@jtarmom - All the best to your birthday!

@HonuNui: wow that octupus is really well camouflaged - that you managed to spot it before it was moving is amazing.

    --

@all : Thanks to everyone for the great encouragement for my first race - I'll let you know how it goes! And I know I have this running challenge to blame when the alarm goes off at an ungodly hour on Sunday B)

75 miles again for me, but this time I'm only counting the miles I run. Walking miles are just a bonus.

    exercise.png
    4/1 - 3 miles - total: 3 miles
    4/3 - 4 miles - total: 7 miles
    4/6 - 7.5 miles - total 14.5 miles
    4/7 - 7 miles - total 21.5 miles
    4/8 - 6.2 miles - total 27.7 miles
    4/9 - 4.75 miles - total 32.45
    4/11 - 7.5 miles - total 39.95

Amendment: If I walk a total of less than 5 minutes out of 90, I'm not going to try to take the walk breaks back out of my mileage total.

    4/12 - 4.5 miles - total 44.45

Another amendment: I can't differentiate running time and walking time when I run outdoors, so I'm counting the whole thing. I think I prefer the treadmill, overall.

    4/13 - 7 miles - total 51.45
    4/14 - 2 miles - total 53.45
    4/15 - 2 miles - total 55.45

    4.68 miles. Total is 28/50

And there I was, elated in my new shoes-fast and pain free until mile 4... Bam...Ice & rest?

I'm not even bummed. Least my calves, hamstrings, hip, or back didn't hurt. And my new shoes are sweet! With my new smart wool socks... Where have these been all my life..

@Elise4270 - Oh no - did your gait feel different in your new shoes? Did it continue to hurt after you stopped running and took off your shoes? I think if it were me I would ice it and try my old shoes on my next (short) run to see how it does. If it is fine I would try the new ones again and see if it comes back. If it only hurts with your new shoes I would take them back and get an analysis and a different shoe.

To those who have encouraged me. Thank you. I made it through my 1st C25K training workout. It has taken me 3 weeks to get through day one, but I did it!!! It felt wonderful. A little burn at the back of my legs, but they feel ok now. Ha. I'm sitting here at the computer. I'm not even wheezing too bad. You were right. I was trying to go too fast. Thank you. Thank you.

I would try this too. Sorry you are hurting.

I think it's my work shoes that aggravate my knee. They are too big and heavy steel toe boots. I could feel it coming on earlier in the day. My gait is off with my back/left leg being goofy.

I feel like my gait is spot on in these shoes (er better). Still, I'll allow time to adjust. I had no calf or back pulling. Oh it was so nice. I ran and never had to think about where my foot was. I do need to work on getting my knees up, helps with the landing.

It didn't bother me walking. Only hills up and down. Shoes were fine walking in them. I plan a gait analysis in a few weeks once I'm done with my surgeons testing, hoping he says alls well and get after it.

    Thanks!

Haven't been on MFP for the last 14 days because of family issues and lack of time so it's taken me some time to catch up on the posts although I haven't read all of them as that would take me a whole day I think. Great to see everyone doing so well, congratulations to all who have completed races in the last 2 weeks.
Beccajayn... Great job, I bet your feeling great right now.

Elisa4270... sorry to hear about your knee pain, get the ice on it , I hope it feels better tomorrow.

38.4 miles completed so far this month so not quiet half way but will be back on track after tomorrows run.

    38.4 done..... 41.6 to do.

Decided to take a rest day, after much internal debate! But realized I hadn't had one since the 1st and I know if I didn't do it today, it would be at least another week. Since Thursdays I work all day and then teach a class from 5-10pm, it's not much of a rest day anyway!

    April 1 - rest
    April 2- 6.01 miles
    April 3- 5.15 miles
    April 4 - 34 mile bike ride
April 5 - 20 mile bike ride - hilly ride.
    April 6 - 6.01 miles
    April 7 - Weight Training
    April 8 - 4.89
    April 9 - 6.02
    April 10 - 5.03
    April 11 - 34 mile bike ride
    April 12 - 40 mile bike ride
    April 13 - 4.25 miles
    April 14 - Weight Training
    April 15 - 5.1 miles :)
    April 16 - rest
