Basically you eat under 20 grams of carbs per day. There are keto sticks you pee on to see if your body is in ketosis. Better to do high fat, moderate protein and low carbs. By cutting back on carbs some people find themselves less hungry, so they comsume less calories.

Your diet is made up on most high fats and protein, the level of carb can vary however. Most tend to set either under 20 grams or 50 grams of protein, I found after I completed the first week I was having a lot less hunger cravings and tend to have a slightly lower calorie intake as a result.

It terms of how it works, when you're eating a low carb amount you're body will turn to your fat reserves. As a result your liver will convert the fat into fatty acid and ketone bodies, it's the ketone bodies that is then used to replace the glucose from carbohydrates.
