Hi,

I've read a lot of different information on this, and forum posts with varying opinions. Do you ride everyday (for exercise), or do you take a day off in between like weight-lifting or something? I'm just trying to burn calories not race (yet aha).

I just started riding again. Yesterday was my third time. I went 13 miles in under an hour. It felt good, and today I'm slightly sore but not much. I'm thinking I might be able to do it again, but not sure if I should....

Thoughts?

Depends were you are sore ? If its your Butt from the saddle then that will take time to get used to it. If its muscle aches then have a slower ride in a higher gear spinning at a higher RPM if that makes sense.

I run four times a week but I also cycle everyday whether it be on a spin bike or a normal bike just to loosen my legs up more than anything else.

Give it another go today and see how you feel if your really aching have a couple of days off maybe walk instead then get back on the bike.

Its also a good idea to have a hot or cold bath makes no difference (been proven scientifically) straight after your cycle if possible to ease the onset of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). It wont cure DOMS nothing does, but it will ease the discomfort for a while.

I commute to work, so I ride 4 or 5 days a week 70km round trip, on Saturday's I ride to the pool for my morning workout with my Master's team, it is only about 40km round trip. Sunday's I don't usually ride because it is my long run day, plus I do bike maintenance that day.

Work up to whatever feels comfortable for you.

When I cycle regularly, it's 5-6 days a week. Right now, it's a little less, but on the days when I don't cycle, I walk. :)

Bicycling is one of the lower impact cardios, and can be used to replace transportation, so it's a pretty logical choice if you're wanting to build general cardio fitness.

Your *kitten* is gonna be sore for a while till you get used to the saddle, also your glutes and thighs will be wobbly for a week or two.

I used to commute 50-odd km per day, it was fantastic. You replace the cost of the commute (for me it was gas + parking + time) with a free cardio session. We have showers and change rooms at work so it's perfect. However towards the end of the week I was getting pretty tired on the return commutes, so I ended up taking Weds as a rest day.

so yeah. It's an easy way to get up your calories and one of the few exercise methods which can be done in place of another activity, ie commuting.

I'm another commuter cyclist so I ride 2 x per day, 5 days per week. Weekends I ususally stick to walking but occasionally I will do a longer ride.

I do find the rides a bit easier on a Monday, so I think having the rest from cycling over the weekend does seem beneficial to me, but that may just be psychological.

I do lift as well and this usually takes place on cycling days (M, W, F).

Awesome. Thanks for all the input. I'd definitely say my *kitten* is definitely the sorest part with a little soreness in the muscles above my knees. I'll head back out there today then, maybe go for a long easy ride.

I wish I could commute to work. My work is only like 7 miles away, but the roads are way too dangerous to ride on for the first 3.

Are there any back roads / sidewalks / bikepaths nearby which would keep you off of the roads? Head onto Google Maps, go into the options section and flick on 'Bicycling', any safe roads and routes nearby will be highlighted in green. I end up doing about 8km more than I need to, but am on trails the whole way.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know about the bicycle option on there, but unfortunately my street connects to a pretty busy roadway. Cars drive super fast, there are lots of bends and no room for bikes. If I could even make my own path to reach a side road like a few miles up, it could be perfect. I'll have to look into that.
