Since Nordic Walking is not listed in the app, any suggestions on how should it be logged? Thanks.

I just use normal walking, since general consensus is that estimated burn is inflated some.0

Wtf is Nordic Walk?!0

It´s walking or jogging with special poles using an special tecnique similar to cross-country skiing. I´t supposed to burn more calories than simply walking because you have to exersice your upper body, something you don´t do when walking, jogging or running, using only your lower body. Looks like this
I use the poles for jogging or very fast walking and I can tell my arms and back end up very tired after one hour of nordic walking. In theory nordic walking burns between 20%-40% more calories than walking or jogging without poles. Heart rate increases about 20%-30% walking with poles but you don´t perceive much more tired. It´s a very popular exercise in Northern Europe and Germany and it is being slowly introduced here in Spain by German and Nordic tourists. (Yes, I still get those strange looks). In Germany it´s considered an old people´s sport but in fact you can accomodate it to your age and shape making it harder.
I guess I could log nordic walking as jogging. But I really don´t know.

Don´t think it would be accurate. Personally I walk VERY fast or jog with my poles, and my heart rate is much higher than just walking, so I think I could log it as jogging. But not sure anyway.
Perhaps I´ll get myself an HR monitor so I´ll now for sure how many calories I burn.

I googled "calories burned while nordic walking" and it brought up a calculator. You could input your stats and get an estimate. Then you could enter in your own custom entry in MFP.
I would say that any calculator is an estimate (probably an over estimation) but you could do this.. http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/calories_burned.asp?exercise=3300 -
Thank you very much, it seems very useful
Now I just need a Metric System converter0 -

Not even close to walking..... I log 135 cals burned in 30 mins at around 10min/km - and 195 cals in 30 min at the same speed doing Nordic walking....
HRM works best....0 -
It's been over six years since this thread was started and Nordic Walking (stavgång) is still not available in the app or website...
How should we do to get Myfitnesspal to add this?
The popularity has increased greatly I. The Nordic countries and also used by younger people.
Its one of the excercises I use most.
It feels wrong to be a premium user not being able to log this correctly.0 -
1. it's always interesting to see these old "zombie thread" discussions resurrect. some things change, some stay the same.
2. i've been using hiking poles for my lite hiking these past couple of years. i came across references to nordic walking in the process of adopting them, and sometimes alter my walking style more to a nordic-type structure. it really is great exercise. i enjoy the engagement of my upper body in the walking process - not only for the extra calorie burn, but the recruitment of those extra muscles in the exercise. plus the reduction in pressure on my older, bigger-guy knees. i haven't a clue on the accuracy of MFP "walking" calories calculations, but I usually use "brisk walking" in these cases, even if I am doing my usual amble-speed with the sticks. 60 min of "brisk" comes out to 577cals, and that feels appropriate or at least reasonable as an approximation. i agree, though, it's better to have the actual activity stats available.0 -
People in Nordic countries don't walk like that.1
