I thought I've been doing a wonderful job losing weight. I've or so I've thought managed to lose 31lbs since feb. Until I went to see my doc today I was happy with the progress. When I stepped on that dang scale my heart dropped, her scale said I'm 7 pounds more than what I weighed at home on Sunday! I'm disapointed in myself, I'm pissed at my crappy scale for not reading the right weight and most of all I'm pissed at my pcos for making it 1000 times harder to lose weight. I don't know if I should readjust my weight loss on here or continue to go by my scale. I'm so lost, confused and upset with myself. Thankfully I didn't resort to binge eating today which is the only plus. Blah sorry I really needed to vent.

Did you ask your Doctor what your previous weigh in was on your last visit you have to go by that..dont try to use 2 different scales and expect same results.....BUT for logging on MFP use your home scale....The Doctors scale is just for an accurate result comparison....because you dont use it daily..hope that makes sense0

I'm glad you didn't resort to bing eating either, that would have helped nothing. So, way to go, and kudos to you for being strong. No matter which scale you used, as long as you are using the same one, you still lost 31 lbs. And you need to be extremely happy and proud with yourself. The scale at the drs. isn't reading the same, but that doesn't mean you "gained" 7 pounds.
Be strong, be happy and stick to it. And again, way to go on not binge eating!!!0 -
Don't give up we all have set backs.....and if you have been exercising your weight will go up some due to muscles getting bigger,,muscles weigh more than fat...Congrats to you on your progress so far......Just forget this bad day and look forward...You can and will meet your goal..Keep your head up ......Good Luck Sweetie..0

Well no two scales are the same. Do you weigh yourself in the morning with or without clothes? You may have eaten or drank your water. there's alot that can go into it. I would weigh myself at home again tomorrow and if you weigh the same just look at it as different scales. you probably would have started out 7 lbs higher on their scale too. We cant get too caught up on the exact number you are doing awesome.0

Scales are different, PLUS you probably weighed in at the dr's office fully clothed, after having eaten, right? Ignore the Doc's reading. It's flat wrong.

Well if you've been using the same scale all along, then you still DID lose 31 lbs.--you just started 7lbs. more than you thought. I would say if you are planning to continue to use the scale, just leave things as they are on MFP.
I can see how you would feel discouraged right now, but you are still super-successful in your weight loss--don't let it get you down too much. :flowerforyou:0 -

The scales at the Doctor will generally weigh you consistently, just like your home scale will - but they will rarely (if ever) show the same...
Just track on a single scale and you'll be fine - Losing what you've lost so far is fantastic - hang in there because you ARE DOING GREAT! Just don't forget that and you are going to continue to do fantastic!!!!!

Thank you all. I felt like I hit a road block yesterday, I felt horrible. Y'all are so encouraging and I appriecate you taking yur time to help me through this! I will not let this bother me anymore and will push forward to try to meet my goal by the end of 2011.once again I thank each of you!0

This is why you should always use the same scale every time you weigh yourself. My parents scales show a different weight to mine and my doctors shows a differenet weight to both mine and my parents. If your scales are what you used to start and track your weight loss then carry on using those and don't worry about what other scales say.0

I agree. Even if my doctor's scale said I was 10 pounds more than my home scale, I am still 15 pounds lighter than when I started MFP, no matter what scale I step on. It is just that end result number will be different. Don't get discouraged, you have done a fantastic job so far!
I hate weighing at my doctor's office because at home I weigh first thing in the morning (after I go to the bathroom), fully naked. When I weigh at the doctor's, it is usually mid day so I weigh more depending what I drank and ate, plus I am clothed when they weigh me. However, i insist on taking my shoes off, lol.0 -

Agree! and if you hate the idea of not knowing if your scale is a piece o crap or not, go ahead and get a new one. I thought this might happen to me so I got a new scale right away and it is a bit traumatizing to see things on there that you didnt expect. Dont worry and keep plugging away! What ever number of # you have lost you have worked hard and prob look great, no? Feel better too? Isnt that worth it in itself. I really admire folks who ditch the scale. so brave.0 -
My wife has started doing this with me and the scale at home was not registering any weight loss for her after two weeks. She was getting frustrated and weighed on the scale at her work, which is like the kind a doctor uses, and she had a 14 pound weight loss. She used that as her starting point and just weighs in on that scale now. Keep using your home scale and go by what it shows. As others have said, you are doing FANTASTIC and don't get discouraged. For all of us losing weight it can be horrible to see even a pound increase and can cause you to lose focus. Look at the big picture, don't forget your successes and power on.0

How do you know the Dr. scale is right? They have to do upkeep on those things by having someone come in and reset them, etc. Besides you have seen a loss on your scale so you have lost weight. If you are shooting for a certain number remember, we are not made from a cookie cutter and you are your own person. Aim for looking good in you clothes and a healthier you. The scale is the Devil!!!!0

I never pay attention to the dr's scale at all. Maybe it is just me but at home I am the only one stepping on that scale and in the dr's office EVERYONE uses it. When I go to the Dr's office they KNOW not to tell me what I weigh! It makes it a better visit for everyone.

Have you taken any measurements lately? The scale may not always tell the true progress. My weight is coming off slowly, but almost all of my clothes are getting looser on me and people have started noticing I'm losing weight. Maybe a tape measure would be a better reflection of your progress?
And this may sound cliche, but if you're living a healthier lifestyle (exercising, eating better) then you should feel like you've accomplished something! Choosing fruit as a side instead of fries or a salad instead of a burger....these are things to be proud of :flowerforyou:0 -

Keep in mind that doctors' office scales go out of whack all the time. They are used by dozens of patients on a daily basis, and should be re-calibrated regularly. Most offices do not take the time to do that.0 -

Actually, let me tell you this. You do not have to be discouraged. Here's why... The fact is weight fluctuates a lot during the day and being weighed is kind of flawed method of measuring fitness. Reason being because when you are weighed, it's everything that is weighed. From muscle/lean tissue and body fat to and as well as clothes, keys, sneakers, even the food or water you have inside you. It's not logical to think it's that you've gotten "fatter". It simply not true.
One's weight can fluctuate from 4-10 pounds during the day. This is why it is recommended, if you want a good 'truer' reading of your weight, to weigh yourself once a week with the same circumstances! Here's my example. I last weighed myself this passed Sunday. I was 188lbs. I had gone to a doctor's appointment yesterday in the afternoon, after eating breakfast and morning snack along with beverages I was at 191lbs. When I weighed myself Sunday here were the circumstances: It was first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom, having eaten and drank nothing, and I was in my t-shirt and boxers. The same for the week before when I was at 192lbs.
In actuality one of the best inexpensive ways to know how much you've lost weight (and we mean body fat) is to see how your clothes fit and measure your neck and abdomen with something like measuring tape. Or take a skinfold caliper and measure 3 particular areas. Keep doing what you're doing. Weigh yourself once a week, preferably in the morning, to get a 'more accurate' reading and good luck. You're doing awesome!0 -
i have found that with the scales at the docs that unless they calibrate it often it will read differently every time you weigh in on them(worked at a docs office and never weighed on them).I stick to my scale0

I would say compare yourself to your scale that you've been using. There can be a lot of things the vary. It might not be in the morning that you are at Dr. office, you have your clothes and shoes on, you just ate lunch, etc. When you are at home you can get a better idea. I always weigh in the morning at home and the Dr. appt's are usuallly in the afternoon for me. The weight is different.0

Keep using your scale...unfortunately, they all can have a different reading...one day I stepped on the manual scale at my gym and was thrilled with the #, then asked to be weighed on their other scale, electronic, gives you all your fat mass, muscle mass, etc, way more accurate, and the # was about 6 lbs higher. I was crushed. LOL...keep all that in mind. I'm sure you are steadily losing, even if the scales say 2 diff numbers.
