Birth control and things like the IUD tend to make your body act as if its pregnant, especially if you don't have regular periods. This causes weight gain for a lot of people. I personally am on the pill and it defiantly has slowed down my weight loss. I personally dont have the IUD because I haven't had children, but I know several people who are currently on it and have gained 5- 20 pounds while on it.

I had the Mirena done in Oct.2010. I have only been on MFP for 2 weeks but I am doing okay on the weight loss. The only thing I have noticed is that for the most part my periods stopped in December except for a week of high stress mid-April. I do believe that I am experiencing ovarian cysts that cause pain in my lower right abdomen and I think during exercise these cysts might be popping. I don't want to get gory or give TMI, but based on what I am experiencing I think this is the case. I can't say that I gained weight because of the Mirena, I think I gained a few pounds after it was put in because of what I was eating.

Yes, I had some weight gain after having it put in. I am past child rearing age, mine was inserted because the progesterone it releases daily shrinks the fibroid that I had which was causing me to hemmorage.

Actually I would have never used it as birth control as it does not stop a baby from being concieved, it just keeps the baby from adhering itself to the uterus and feeding. So the baby starves and is aborted. So a person who is sexually active could be aborting a baby every month.

Yes that is another side effect of Mirena. I had a ovarian cyst the size of of a softball removed last April after having Mirena in for 3 years. It did stop the bleeding of the fibroid inside of the uterus, but when my overry was removed surgically, they found a large firbroid on the outside of the uterus also.

The safest birth control is Natural Family Planning, no drugs involved.

Actually, looks like condoms are safest form of birth control without chemicals-

If any kind of birth control doesn't work well for you, talk to your doctor. I had to switch off Yasmin after it made me waaay too over-emotional, and now I'm happy with another kind of pill. And I haven't experienced any weight gain with either pill.

Hormonal IUD (Mirena) may produce those side effects, but there is a non-hormonal copper IUD available - Paragard.

Weight gain is a side effect technically - but here's how it works.

The birth control causes your body to think your pregnant by putting hormones into your system. These hormones usually result in cravings. If you aren't watching what you eat and exercising and you give in to those cravings you will gain weight. It's not because of the birth control, it's because of what you are putting into your body in the form of food. I was put on Depo and though it made it a bit harder to manage my willpower it didn't actually slow my weight gain down because I didn't give into the cravings. Once I got used to the depo the cravings went away and now it's all back to normal for me :)

This is why I love my Paraguard! No hormones.
