I hate eating "clean..."

So instead of completely changing my eating habits ( like eating only egg whites, no white pasta etc...) I'm just tweaking them a little. If I want the pasta, I'm eating the pasta, and if I want the cookie I'm eating it. I was so miserable before eating "clean!!" Now I'm going to try to snack on fruits and vegs during the day, and yeah I will eat that ice cream at night if I want it... I'm Italian, so it is almost impossible for me mentally to give up white pasta because I HATE wheat pasta. I don't eat a lot of bread, but if I do I eat wheat... I just ate the idea of going to Olive Garden and not eating bread sticks and pasta.. hahaha Sorry if this is a bad attitude but eating clean is not helping me at all... Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated!!!

For me, it's been all about portions! I think you can have the foods you love, but you have to have them in small quantities!

i think as long as you watch your sodium and portion sizes that you should be good to go. i don't eat completely clean. i just don't think it's in the cards for every single person. do what makes you happy. one cookie won't kill your diet, neither will a cup of pasta. it's when you go crazy with these items that it starts to effect you. :) good luck!

I'm italian too and it's tough to give up the pasta...I love it like crazy. I am also not a fan of wheat pasta but I made the dedication to myself to eat 90% clean if possible and I've stuck to it. It's been worth it - I feel SO much better. Everytime I stray I get sick now (I had a TINY piece of birthday cake for a corworker earlier and I've been sick for 2 hours from the sugar).

I tried to come up with good swaps. I don't eat pasta anymore typically (once every few months, MAYBE) but I do cook up a bunch of Quinoa and load it with garlic and spaghetti sauce. It cures my craving and I get the pasta feel - it's all about the sauce!

Italians are not by nature over weight. Their diet consists of lots of fresh vegetables, olive oil, cheese, wine, and SOME pasta / bread.

    The problem is ratios.

Mostly veggies, a small amount of bread or pasta. Not every meal or even every day. Their meals are small and frequent and often accompanied by wine.

I'm with you... eating clean does not work for me either. I have tried it before and failed miserably, gaining more weight than I lost because I binged on the foods I deprived myself of. I love food that tastes good and frankly clean foods just don't taste good to me. Like a previous poster said, it's about moderation and making substitutions. I don't mind the wheat pastas and breads but even too much of those is not good---it's all about portion control. Find what works for you and stick with it!

Yeah its hard when I'm not into a lot of things. Yeah I eat some chicken, probably about 5 bites, not nearly enough to fill me up.. I hate fish etc... I could probably name more things I DON"T like, than the things I do like... Yeah I know its pathetic.. I just don't care for a l ot of the clean foods.... I have been a very picky eater my whole life, and basically ate mostly carbs because its my favorite thing...

Basically my diet consists of a lot of dairy products, fruit, some vegs ( not nearly enough ) and carbs, and a piece of chicken here and there...

There is a lot of contraversy over eating "clean". Some swear by it and some say its not necessary. Here's my take...

I try and eat as healthy and unprocessed as possible, 80% give or take, but 20% of my diet is either processed, like cereals or chips, or beer or wine, or fajita shells or whatever. I think everything in moderation is fine, and if eating a little of what you want helps you stick with it, I completely encourage it! This is about a lifestyle change, so if you're not happy you're not gonna stick with it.

if it fits your macros, you can eat it.
You don't have to eat clean to lose weight.

    If i want pasta/cookies/pizza/chocolate, I eat it.
Find a way to fit your foods into your daily goals, and you're fine.

Thanks a lot for the feed back I appreciate it! I'm glad some other people agree with me! I make myself miserable by worrying about what I can't eat or what I shouldn't eat its pathetic!

I agree about whole wheat pasta. I think it tastes a little grainy and has a weird gray color. But have tried Barilla Plus? That's my favorite and healthier than wheat (more protein and is still white). Or Smart Taste brand pasta, which is white pasta with added fiber .

what bout whole grain white? just an idea. Sometimes if I don't think i'll be eating bread I wont buy the wheat bread however, I buy whole grain white bread for my fiance and if I'd need bread I end up eatin a slice or two of it instead of buyin a loaf to go to waste.

I have no problem with 100% wheat bread I actually like it.. The pasta is the killer for me. I don't like the consistency of wheat. I'm going to try the Barilla plus. thank you for the suggestions!

    I don't eat clean

    I eat better.

If I want that burger, I make sure I have the calories to eat it, or go home and bust my butt on that stationary bike in order to have it

If I want that chocolate, I eat it. . .same way

but i'm also trying to eat smaller portions and more veggies, and just eating better :)

Oh and whole wheat pasta IS nasty...coming from another Italian...I'd rather just eat regular pasta once in a while than bother with that crap...lol

Stationary bike is my best friend.

I eat exactly what I want. I grew up eating veggies so that was no problem in the first place, but when I want a burger, pizza, beer, etc., I make sure it fits into my calorie goal or I work it off. I don't knock eating clean for those who can do it, but for me, I have to do what I intend to do for the rest of my life and eating clean forever ain't it. Everything in moderation and just add the extra healthy stuff in little by little and you should be fine...do what works for you!!!

portions & moderation is the key here. eat small portions and only when you REALLY crave it. this way, you get what you want... healthy lifestyle & the food you enjoy. it's a win/win.

Thank you--I thought that was what it was, but wasn't sure. I'm doing better; but it's pretty hard to avoid all processed foods--even whole-grain breads fall in that category---and a person's gotta have bread once in a while....

and those who think that are wrong and rude and should STFU :)

My opinion is, I know I will fail if I can't have my favorite foods. . .so rather than fail and quit, I eat what i want, lately with the stress I've been under, have gone over my calories now and then, but I'm not going to kick myself, just take each day a day at a time :)

I have always found the Italian diet pretty good.

You don't see many fat Italians. They are so passionate about the fresh ingredients.

I love your country so much. The cities are just made for walking (that probably helps with the diet).

p.s. why not make your own pasta? That would be a good option to avoid giving it up altogether.

Where abouts are you from. I am going to Florence soon and am very tempted to try some cooking classes there.

I try to eat healthy most of the time, but I'll go out and eat what I want and not feel guilty about it! If you're doing good a lot of the time then don't worry about it!

haha I am an Americanized Italian, not your true Italian living in Italy... Which is probably why I'm not skinny!!!

Oh and FYI, since I went back to some of my old habits ( eating what I want in moderation ) I have lost 7 lbs... I stopped counting calories about a month ago. I was so caught up in eating only healthy things. I obviously wasn't doing something right...
