I heard a while ago that cold meds cause weight gain. Can anyone confirm? Also, does anyone know of any cold meds that wouldn't do this? Perhaps something more naturopathic? I am using echinacea and Oil of Oregano but not getting any better. Thanks for any info you can share :-)

Are you sure it's just a cold? Have you been to a Dr.? Certain medications can cause water retention, or even constipation, but overeating is what causes weight gain.

If you have prolonged cold symptoms that aren't getting better, you should really see a doctor...

Personally, my allergy medicine has a side effect of decreasing my appetite. But even IF it caused increased appetite, I would be taking it, to make springtime tolerable.

I have never heard of cold meds causing weight gain. In my experience, I do not feel extra hungry or lazy when taking cold meds. Well, if they are not non-drowsy I might sleep more but I wouldn't take them often enough that they would interfere with my activity level all that much.

some medications like ephederine are drying. This drying can occur not only in your nasal/sinus passages, but also your airways and other mucus membranes. Your body may adjust to this by retaining water, often pulling it from your stool in the colon and by concentrating your urine more. In the end, this may lead to some water retention and possibly a touch of constipation. drinking plenty of fluids when dealing with a cold is vital to help thin mucous secretions as well as offset some of that "drying" effect of many cold medicines. If you have a "cold" with symptoms that last longer than 10 days, you should see your doctor. You could have a sinus infection or bronchitis that requires more than oil and OTC meds.

Thank you all for your comments. Sounds like I'm going to book a drs appointment.
