Your body doesn't need a detox.

Try a search. This is a common question.
The consensus seems to be that they're a waste of money and basically a laxative.

Edit to fix consensus, not conscience.

I drink a cup of detox tea every once in a while. All it seems to do for me is make me pee. I love tea though. I honestly don't think it does much either way. But the sound of the name makes you think you are doing something good.

What is it supposed to cleanse, and how can one know it's working as promised?

    You - could - do a search.

    Mainly science.

Because they're simply a laxative. They make you poop, that's all.

You mean laxitives - beacuse that's what they are. Can lead to dehyrdration- which may have a small weight loss but once you drink a few glasses of water its all back again.

Liver and kidneys do a fine job, you don't need to do anything special to "detox" your body, but if you're just into doling out cash I'll gladly oblige.

    Why is that

If you want advice from MFP users you can read other threads on the topic as it gets asked at least once per week. Additionally, and an even better idea, is to read independent, peer reviewed, science based articles and papers on the subject. Don't trust sales pitches or solicited testimonials.

Dig for the answer yourself and it may be more meaningful.

Put another way: stimulant laxatives to lose weight-good or bad?

    OBVIOUSLY the answer is BAD

Not good. Potentially bad. Mostly just unnecessary.

The tea one--this is BooTea, right? came up on the Confessions thread recently--looks harmless, but certainly not useful.

Detoxing isn't really a thing, and like others have said most detoxes are just laxatives.

As far as "woo" things go, I have a bit of a weakness for teas, but usually the "calming" or "positive energy" type claims. And I expect it's a placebo really.

First of all, I LOVE your hair in that picture. I will admit that I had previously tried a detox tea that claimed to increase metabolism, curb appetite, "detox" (which meant make you GO #2), and overall help you lose weight. At the end of the day it ended up being just an overpriced tea. Lesson learned for me.

Yeah don't fall for that. Go to your local Vitamin Shoppe or GNC & get a box of "detox tea" bags (they probably have some all-natural ones) if you want to try it, they should only be a few $. I tried "dieter's tea" once & let's just say make sure you are near a bathroom for the first half of your day...haha. Obviously you will lose some weight & feel less bloated once you get rid of all your waste. That's nothing special or new that those teas offer, it's usually senna root which is a laxative.

The Bootea thing is actually pretty open about what it is, although they make other questionable claims:

    http://www.bootea.com/pages/how-to-use

Basically one gives you energy (because it has caffeine) and the other is a laxative.

Not sure why that's a "detox," but at least it's not as misleading as some things.

Interesting. This is helpful... I was thinking of it more for a 'cleanse' result. Perhaps a simple food cleanse would work better. From what you are al saying it sounds like the tea-tox is more like straight chemicals and not necissarily healthy.

Noclady1995 - thanks for the compliment!

When you say you want a "cleanse," what exactly are you hoping to accomplish? Your body naturally "cleanses" itself.

well, over the holiday season I would say my eating habbits were not exactly ideal. I just have read (in science based books) that doing a cleanse of your system is not a bad thing. Sometimes all the bad food can build up inside your body. Additionally, I have high blood pressure and do not want to clog anything up. I do watch my salt intake carefully for this.

I question the science in those books. Or that food from the holiday season is hanging around in your body waiting to be cleansed.

What "science based books"? Bad food does not build up inside your body. Unless your kidneys, intestines and digestive system have shut down, in which case you need to get to a doctor immediately.

This doesn't sound like it is based on actual nutritional science.

What are these "science based books"? What exactly do they tell you a "cleanse" will do for you? And how exactly are foods you ate months ago building up inside your body?

Extra credit, how does eating or drinking some certain kind of food remedy this?

Doesn't sound like science to me, maybe science fiction.

Name one toxin or bad food. Just one.

I see all the time, whether at work, or in my personal life...someone is talking about doing a "detox", or drink a "detox drink"...In EVERY circumstance, these folks are morbidly obese and searching for a "solution" to their weight struggles...I used to try to talk about things like deficits and activities, but the latest shake or drink will work better...Almost never is someone "in shape" and discusses detox drinks or systems...

This response made me LOL! I think it was the mental picture of the food just hangin out in the intestines (wearing santa hats) refusing to be digested with it's friends holding up picket signs that say "cleanse me". LOL!

OP, no, just no! Your body does a fine job of "detoxing / cleansing" itself. The only thing that is going to get smaller by doing these things is your wallet.

I have done detoxes (not with tea though) and can vouch for them doing sweet F all for weight loss. Mentally they do help you feel refreshed, until you realize how much money you spent for no benefit whatsoever in the long run. Honestly, seeing the success I have now with food logging and exercise (both free) I could kick myself for being so damn gullible and buying into it.
