For the ladies - that time of the month

I was wondering if any one else gets really hungry, or hungrier than usual, during their time of the month. Is this normal and should you eat a little more to satisfy your hunger? I usually have at least a couple hundred calories to spare at the end of the day, but today I'm cutting it close. This is my first cycle since I've changed my diet and eating habits so I'm just curious. Thanks!

For me, ABSOLUTELY! During my time, I almost always have to eat extra to keep my hunger at bay. But it's usually stuff like chocolate chip cookies or some kind of salty snack It's hard to make good food decisions that week!0
-
Normal! Thank you stupid progesterone. Try to increase your water and protein intake to combat bloat & hunger.0
-
I find myself a lot more hungry a week before :ohwell: I just try to exercise more so I can snack more.0
-
I do!!! When I get close to that time of the month, I normally want sweets, so I stock up on 2 or 3 boxes of those 100 calorie pack desserts at the grocery. I get my sweet tooth taken care of, and I dont tip the scales!0
-
Yea idk?! I've only been on here 10 days,I'm kinda curious myself0

I eat like a horse during my TOM and sometimes i go over my calories but i do try and workout out more to compensate for the bad days.0

I always get more hungry. I usually use a day or two during it as cheat days. Makes me feel better. Good Luck!0

umm absolutely flippin ravenous. this month i ate so much i made myself feel sick. so much fun, good news is when the stupid thing is finally over, i drop like 4 pounds of bloat weight overnight. makes me miserable though. just try to eat healthfully and know it will pass. ugggh!0

I find I'm starving for a couple of days around TOM...and usually craving salt and chocolate. I do give into it to the tune of an extra 100-200 cal. Something like a bowl of oatmeal with some almonds and a bit of dark chocolate usually does the trick and keeps me out of the pringles!! I figure my my body needs that energy for whatever reason (to fuel the pms rage, maybe lol) and part of this whole new way of eating is learning to listen to my body!0

Yeah, what she said ...0 -
i don't get hungrier...i crave bad things though.0

I must have chocolate covered pretzels or kettle corn popcorn. I just indulge usually but only one or two so I can taste it. Other than that I try to eat a lot of fiber (to stay fuller longer) and drink lots of water. But if I don't indulge it makes my emotional symptoms worse, I just want to cry. But yes, I want to eat everything I see.0

Well it's my TOM right now and last week I COULD NOT get enough sweet stuff! It was terrible! This week isn't so bad.0

Those 100 calories bars are the best way to go for a sweat tooth. I'm glad I'm not the only one. They satisfy the cravings.0
-
I'm going through that this week. I craved salty so bad yesterday and caved in to burger king, I knew it was bad but it was like I NEEDED it! Not to mention I was all crampy so I didn't want to work out--double whammy-- I really didn't know what to expect since this is only my 2nd week of changing my lifestyle but I know what to do next month! Lol0

It's normal... your metabolism increases so it makes you hungry! I drink lots of water and do lots of cardio and eat more. Normally the scale is up, but last month I actually lost a pound that week!0

Try and workout it will make you feel much better! You can eat more too just try and make it healthier.0 -
Well for me, I crave chocolate and more chocolate and I eat all day... I hate it...0
-
This is absolutely normal!!! You naturally burn about 400 calories more per day when you are "on." This is because your organs are working extra hard. Keep working out because it reduces the craps and do drink lots of water to keep bloating to a minimum. But cut your self some slack on calories because probably are hungry.0

I am definitely hungrier those days, but just try and make smart choices about how to calm the cravings--a couple Snickers Minis or dark chocolate Kisses rather than a whole chocolate bar, etc. And I try to just make sure there's still a deficit of a couple of hundred calories per day, even if it's not the normal 400. And just take an extra walk.
Definitely get enough water and control your sodium so you don't retain it. Helps a lot, from what I've found!0 -
Hell yes I do... I crave salt so bad.... I want to eat salt out of the salt shaker and I tend to consume far too much which causes water retention and bloating and then my clothes are too tight and oh well! I'll take it once a month over having another child because two c-sections are enough for me right now and I don't care to be cut open in again in th near future.
Hey, if you know a secret to stop the consuming of extra food clue me in.0 -
I too eat like a fiend usually 3-5 days prior and 3 days in to the cycle. I normally crave "salty" and yes, I do cave in. I try to work out extra on those days or days leading up (and eat under to bank calories). I drink 12-16 glasses daily and usually go up about 2 pounds...unfortunately, it is "nice" to read that this too happens to others. Misery does love company!0

I allow myself two cheat days a month and I even try to make wiser decisions on those days. That being said, two or three additional days I'm starving. I try to eat smaller meals, enabling me to snack more but its still a pain in the *kitten*.0

It is funny you ask this because I had this same question around 4:15 today when I felt like I was famished! (and I should be starting my period tomorrow). I found this interesting article by weight watchers. To sum it up, on the days before your period you burn about 150 more calories than regular daily. So if you are on a pretty strict calorie diet, you are going to notice those calories peacing out on you But they said you really burn no more than that, it is simply a myth. I am sure it different from person to person, but that is what the scientist people said Here is the link: http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=1&art_id=20781&sc=801
I made the weekly goal of no sweets this week on purpose. I will prevail.0 -
Funny you should post this because for the past few days, I could not stop eating. I didn't know what was going on and what is wrong with me. Then low and behold, here he is. Thats why I felt the way I did. Glad to know I wasn't losing it. So yes except your hunger to change. Don't get discourage. You will get through this.0

LOL!!! Thats great!!
i get the same way too....i always know when TOM is coming cuz a day or 2 before I am always sooooooooo starving I could eat everything in the house!! And my husband would probably agree with you that its to fuel the PMS rage!! my poor hubby....0 -
I don't get hungry, but only because I am so nauseous and crampy that the thought of eating at all is a really bad thought.0
-
Oh definitely. And guess who sits eight feet from a vending machine crammed full of chocolate and crisps, at work?0
-
haha, absolutely. i sometimes feel like i might have to eat one of the children if i can't get in the kitchen immediately. that proper shakey faint starving. *shakes fist* i just have to go with it. sadly i want to eat mountains of bread or pasta, which i'm trying to cut back on.0
-
I get REALLY bad cravings the a few days to a week before, but I don't deprive myself because that's when I know I'll binge so I will eat a candy bar or something small but sweet to ease that. Then the week of I still get cravings so I have little 100 calorie snack cakes and peanut butter cookies to eat to help out.0
