Do sore muscles mean you are gaining muscle? Its been a long time since high school health, but I thought the muscle ache was actually small tears...or was it lactic acid???

    No not necessarily.

IF you were to lift weights while eating 100 calories per day you would still get sore, doesn't mean the muscle will grow.

IF i ran a marathon today I would be very sore tomorrow, running marathons is not conducive to muscle gain

    This ^^^

The muscle ache is small tears, but unless you eat sufficiently well afterwards they won't "gain". They will repair, but may source the energy required for this process from other muscle tissue if there isn't sufficient resources.

Usually sore muscles only indicate that you aren't used to the work. They are zero indication that you will see any sort of growth.
