I'm trying to get up the courage to sign up for a 12km race in August. I can run 5-6km without too much trouble, but I'm really really slow (I started with c25k in January but have had a bit of time off with knee trouble)
I'd love to know what kind of time people take for this kind of race and whether it is worth me even giving it a go. I don't mind being slow but I just don't want to finish three hours after everyone else, when they are packing up the finish line :)

So, please help me out. Can you give me an idea of your time for a race of this distance? I'd specially love to hear from beginner runners who run very slowly!

  • I have never run that far, but my typical 5k time is about 33-34 minutes. So, I figure at my pace it would take me about 2 hours and 12 minutes or so. I am not a fast runner, but not among the slowest either. Good luck!

Do it!!!! I'm a turtle when it comes to running but have run many races, including marathons and ultras. There will always be someone slower and it's really just about personal experience. If you can do 5ks, you already have a great foundation. Just add a little more to each week's long run and you will be there in no time. You could also incorporate walking to work on endurance. Bragging rights are the best. :)
  • I am certainly no speed demon and I JUST ran a 10k in 1:09 (my first since I had my son 5.5 months ago). So, I would say for your first race a time of 1:30 - 2:00 would be a-ok!

And frankly, don't worry about how long after "everyone" else you come in. You're doing this for you, right? Do what you can and be proud of your accomplishments! Don't ever compare yourself to someone else.
