Just to throw another opinion into the ring - I've been a runner for years, and found that using a foam roller is the most effective way for me to relieve muscle soreness from both running and strength training - stretching just isn't that effective (for me). If you have a Pilates class at your gym, see if they utilize foam rollers, and then you can get an idea of how to use them properly on your own. Or ask someone...it's amazing!0

I've lost 50 since Jan doing 30-1hr of cardio a day +weight training. When using elipticals I put resistance to also tone& incline. good luck.0

Foam rollers FTW!! I use them before and after leg workouts as well as after runs. Every runner should use a foam roller if you ask me!0 -

I doubt my resting heart rate of 50 or steadily climbing VO2 Max would have been achieved by diet and strength training alone.
If you are saying it "doesn't matter" for weight loss, sure that's strictly true if we are talking only about calorie deficits but it's clear the OP has discovered she is into more than just weight loss now.
To the OP in addition to great advice to not overdo things, take running rest days, you should consider running outside too. Trails are great and easier on the body than a treadmill. Even city running has it's charm. Find a park to circle and people watch. A running club, etc, there are so many avenues to make it even more enjoyable. Check in with a local running specialty store for advice on groups in your area that run.... There are in many areas running groups for all abilities and interests... It can be a very social pursuit.

I think it's stressful to think of cardio as a way to lose weight, and prefer to think of it as a way to be able to eat more. Diet comes first.
I agree. Honestly, I do cardio because it feels good, and it's good for my body. I sit most of the day at work, and I actually get muscle and back aches and pains if I don't exercise for a few days. It's also good for my heart, and helps me improve my asthma symptoms by improving lung capacity.
I also like having those extra calories when losing weight, but I wouldn't eat them all back unless your activity level is set to sedentary (which mine is right now because I have a desk job.)
I am trying to maintain and recomp right now (and also maybe repair a bit of metabolic damage) so I only do cardio when I want to, but strength training takes priority. It's actually hard to eat enough if I do a lot of cardio.0 -

Yup, for me me the difference between 1200 calories a day and 1600 calories a day is huge. I exercise so I can eat enough to feel satisfied. 1200 just leaves me feeling grumpy and lethargic. 1600 makes it easier to meet nutritional needs and allow me to eat food I enjoy with out stressing over every bite.
Not to mention I just feel better when I exercise.
this is why i started exercising! LOL!
and now i love it. I do cardio and strength training (more cardio at this point in my journey). Closer to my goal weight and that will likely start to shift.0 -

I have been losing weight this way, I've been feeling more lethargic and some days I just struggle.
If you've been struggling and feel tired some days, you got 2 things happening (1) not eating enough (2) not taking rest days. I don't think I seen any post that you have some kind of activity tracker, you could probably use one. I agree with the other poster you can't select an area on your body to lose weight, If only that were true.
I've been looking into the fit bit but I'm trying to keep expenses down at the moment trying to move to Florida from New York. I really do wish you could just focus on one area!! The majority of my weight is in my belly, so much so people thought I was pregnant that's when I knew I needed to make some changes! I've upped my calories today and lowered my cardio I do feel less lethargic! Thank you for all the great tips! I do have a quick question however, shin pain does that ever stop! When I started it was really bad I then got leg compressor and it helped for awhile, could it be due to the same thing not eating enough and not enough rest days?
Shin splints are usually from running and compression sleeves are good only problem is they mask the real problem. To me it seems like your doing too much and need to incorporate a rest day in your work outs.
What type of sneaker are you running in ? how old are they ? and do you use them for all activities or just running ? How often / How long do you run (1hr) ? Are you running on the same side of the road everytime you run ?
Sorry for you delayed response, I did buy new sneakers only for the gym, they made brooks specifically for running. They came with a heel support because I have plantar fasciitis. I was doing about 45 minutes each time about four to five days a week. I've cut back the time and it made a world of difference.0 -

Thank you so much that's really great ideas! Honestly I've been going to my gym because I'm embarrassed at this point to go run with real runners, I'm getting better but at this point I'm far from fit or being in shape. I'm committed though and I really think I would love a running club for now I think trails would be a great idea. I've always wanted to be in a marathon it's actually a personal goal of mine. After I realized how much I loved running I've set out to see this dream come true! I suppose that's why I've been over doing it, but I see now that it only causes more damage and that I need to take this step by step. Thank you so much for your help!0 -

Well, Plantar Fasciitis you didn't say that in the original post you could be compensating for the plantar fasciitis during your runs and other activities. This could cause shin issues, if your form is off and I can bet it is. Plantar Fasciitis is nothing to mess.
Try icing your shins after your runs and reduce the amount.
