confused

I upped my calories because I wasn't feeling well and didn't realise just how silly it was for me to be on 1200cals.

Today is going pretty well, but I now have a slight issue.

I have over 200cals left, but am apparently 4grams over my fats and carbs and 28grams over my protein goal. What am I supposed to eat?

Sorry if this is a dim question, I'm just a bit confused. TIA

Did you check to make sure your entries are accurate to their nutrition labels/USDA's info? If you're within your calories, you should not be over on all of your macros.

That said, if you have calories left and want to eat them, eat something you know will satisfy you. It's fine to go over on one or two macros. Fat and protein are oftentimes looked at as minimums to reach.

Focus on your deficit and dont worry about macros. Just ensure you get in the min amount of fibre 18g and protein 46g for a woman. If you eat a balanced diet from a variety fo food sources the macros take care of themselves. Vit different if you are following a specific macro driven plan. Of it were me then id eat whatever I fancied and worry less.

I would eat 2Tbsp of peanut butter or 1 cup of skim milk and some yogurt. Or eat whatever you want within that 200 calories. Don't worry so much about the macros. If you're trying to lose, it's all about meeting your calorie deficit goal.

Thanks, could you explain to me why I have gone over on the macros when I haven't met my calorie goals? Is the food I am eating too high in protein and not enough calories? I'm reallly trying to juggle it around so I feel well and eat enough but I feel like I am choosing the wrong foods.

My diary is open if anyone could take a look for me? Sorry to be a pain!

I have scanned everything in and it is all things I have eaten before with no issues.

People will still create entries that have outrageous macro entries. Carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram, and fats have 9 calories per gram.

Your diary is showing that you have 44 grams of carbs and 8 grams of fat remaining, and you've exceeded your protein goal by 7 grams.

It's over on carbohydrates because it includes grams of fiber, but those don't actually give you calories. So, if you want to be a stickler on your macros (I think that level of precision isn't necessary), then that means eat some carbs.

If you've gone over on protein and fat....then you must be under on carbs. No biggie. Many people treat protein as a minimum, going over is not a problem. Many other people eat high fat diets on purpose. It's up to you. It's not being over on macros that make you gain weight ...it's being over on calories.

By the way I'm going to have some nutella on toast, so I'm taking your advice and not panicking about the macros, I'm just wondering what's going on with it really now!

Why are you worried about it?

Honestly, I don't track my macros. I'm not deficient in anything, my blood pressure and other labs are perfect and other than calories, the macros just don't make a huge difference to me at this point in my life. They can go in the red all they want and I don't bat an eye....

the only time I pay attention to the sodium level is if I am feeding it to my grandfather, as he has kidney disease and has to watch it. And thats the only time I even look at it (and then its for the meal, not the day, because what I eat is very different than what he eats (Which is good sometimes and bad sometimes LOLOL)

I looked at your diary for today under on carbs/fats over on proteins but it's not a big deal...those are minimums and if you do go over it's not life or death it's a bonus.

Okay, I looked a just a couple of your days and it looks like you are not using the best food entries. On the day you had chinese type food, almost all of the ingredients were off if you compare calories given vs. calories calculated by macros. You have tomatoes listed and they show no macros and calories only. I found about 5 or 6 things that were off in just 2 days of logging. Most were off by about 10ish calories, so not major, but these can and will add up over time.

When you are choosing food entries, compare the nutrition information listed to the product you have. It will take a while at first, but as you use the same products over and over it will get easier. I've logged quite a few times and these things sometimes still get me. The other day I seemed really low on protein and I found that the bean option I chose for my original recipe calculations was off by 50% even though the calorie count was correct. It's easy to miss these things.

Also, when you quick add, you don't get your carbs/fats/proteins in so you will show you haven't hit those goals even though you are over.

Sorry I missed your reply. I was worrying about it because I haven't got a clue what I'm doing and didn't know it wasn't important. I won't worry any more!

Right, it's showing you that because the macros provided don't match up with the calorie goal.

A glaring example - you had a jacket potato for 174 calories. The macros were 0 carbs, 0 fat and 4 protein. If you calculate calories by using the macros, that potato should only account for 16 calories, not the 174 listed. Or, you had tomatoes for 8 calories with no carbs, no fat and no protein listed. If you have a lot of entries like this, you will show over on calories but under on all of your macros.

On some of your products, you might have 5 carbs, 5 fat and 5 protein which should be 76 calories but the entry might say 50 calories (just a random example). If you have a lot of entries like this, at the end of the day you will be over on your macros but look like you still have calories left.

The most accurate way to log will be to choose the entries where the macros match the calories. If you have a nutrition label for the food you have, then just match the macros listed in MFP with the food label. If you don't have a nutrition label, say for a tomato, just do a quick scan to see if the math adds up. If a calorie containing item (more than 5 calories) shows all 0s in the macro fields, you know the entry is incorrect.

Thank you, I feel a bit daft for thinking that if I scanned it in then it would be right! I usually check that just the calorie number is right, I didn't think to check the rest. Thanks so much.

    Yep, I bet it's this.^

People create entries that are incorrect. I pulled in an entry for peanuts once....they were lower in fat & higher in carbs. My guess is the person who entered that reversed those 2 numbers.
