Am I on the right track?

I just discovered myfitnesspal one week ago and am trying to get rid of a bit of my belly and become more fit. While my ultimate goal is to get down to a good weight and maintain it, I have a trip coming up in six weeks which provided an incentive to get my butt in gear. I am a 5'11" male, 43 years old and started at around 201 lbs. one week ago today. I am now down to around 195 lbs and my optimistic goal is to get down to 180 before our trip, and then get down to and maintain 170-175 thereafter. I am sure my initial weight loss was the "low hanging fruit" and my progress going forward is going to be slower, but it was nice to burn a few pounds off quickly to give me some motivation.
Anyway, my activity level is sedentary as I work a desk job. With a goal of 2 lbs per week it said my intake should be 1280 calories per day. However, I have a difficult time staying under that number so I am exercising to "earn" additional calories. I am doing cardio 4-5 times per week and burning 500-600 calories in each workout. If I add my calories from exercising to the 1280 calories I generally have no trouble staying below the new number. My biggest challenge is that I'm a bit of a foodie and can't see myself becoming a "health food" junkie. However, I have been more conscious lately about what I am eating, and I'm generally staying away from the really bad stuff. Admittedly though I probably should be eating more fruits and veggies and less starchy foods.
Does this sound like an effective overall strategy? Anything I should change? Is my goal of 15 additional pounds in the next 6 weeks realistic? I am pretty goal oriented and as long as I see movement in the right direction and make reasonable progress, I tend to push harder and harder until I get there.
Thanks for any input!

I lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks with a similar strategy. Since men, in general, lose weight faster than women, it sounds like you are on the right path. I was on 1200 calories and tried to burn about 300 per day and only eat back 200.0

Hi. Welcome to MFP. If you want to start adding friends for support and motivation, feel free to add me. I'd love to help any way I can. Since you are a male and because of your size (ht/wt) I don't know if that's the right range but I feel like there are others on here who will be happy to advise on that. But your PLAN sounds good. You should be able to find that sweet spot where you can still enjoy your fav foodie indulgences from time to time too without it sabotaging your progress. This is a great place for advice and friends who will keep you on track and accountable. I have a lot of amazing friends on here. I'd be lost without them to help me when I'm struggling or to share my victories. One bit of advice. Get a food scale and weigh and measure your food so you are logging accurately. That will help you more than you can imagine.0

I've been on MFP for two weeks exactly and I am in almost the same position as you; age 47, height 6'1", starting weight 201 lbs, and the same goal. I'm also confined to the desk for work and looking to lose 2 lbs a week. Sticking to the plan as closely as I can, I have been losing an average of 0.75 lb/day, and I now weigh 191 lbs. It's been a pleasant surprise.
If it kept going at this rate, I'd hit my target by May 23. Like you say, I've been expecting the rate to slow down, but it hasn't yet.0 -
Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement. I'll keep plugging away at it. I hate always feeling a little hungry, but I think I am just used to eating whenever and however much I want. I just have to get used to eating smaller portions and give my body time to adjust. Congrats to all of you to on your progress and accomplishments!
