My job is causing me to eat unhealthier.

I have a job that schedules me from 4-6 pm to 12-1 am. I normally take a sandwich to nibble on but i don't really have a lot of ideas for other things to eat. I've been taking fiber one bars, but those leave me hungry in an hour... Carrots are the same way. i don't really like the fact that I'm eating so many "bars," but I don't get a meal break so it has to be something I can keep behind the desk with me that doesn't have to be refrigerated! Ahh.

If you have a microwave, take a bowl and some instant oatmeal. Oatmeal always keeps me full! And remember to drink your water because that will fill your stomach and keep you from snacking

Peanut butter (or any other nut butter) and whole grain crackers.

No microwave. I might take some almonds though! They're just high in calories...

Working retail, I have the same long hours with not much break time. I pack animal crackers and drink a lot of water to hold me over. Fiber or protein drinks also do a pretty good job. Special K makes some good ones.

Where do you live? Isn't it illegal to not give at least a 30 minute meal break for an 8 hour day?

beef jerky, nuts, popcorn (already popped), crackers and PB, carrot sticks, cheese sticks, hard boiled eggs.

BUT for goodness sake, speak up! You are entitled to a meal break, and if you complain and they fire you, you can sue them for ZILLIONS!

I'm not exaggerating, I teach employment law. They are violating federal law if you are working for over 6 hours and they do not provide a meal break.

I hear ya! I work in a contact centre as a manager and although I keep snacks at my desk, I'm running around so much that I lose track of time and don't really eat a 'proper' meal from after breakfast until supper. Fiber one bars and Luna Bars, plus easy snacks like grapes and raw almonds are all I seem to be able to eat.

Hmm, that's tough, it's quite a long time and late at night.
My best suggestion would be plan in a number of snacks. If you plan and log them into your diary before you go to work then you can keep control of how much you are eating during the day to allow for snacking during the evening at work. Here's some suggestions:
    - trail mix (can be high in cals, make sure you weightit. Add in some popcorn to give a bit more volume without so many cals)
    - Peanut butter sandwich. I take one slice of bread with half a tbsp on peanut butter and this comes in under 200 cals when made with nice grainy bread.
    - Can you take a little cooler bag with an icepack then you can take all kinds of sandwiches or wraps - egg, mushrooms and spinach scrambled together and wrapped in a tortilla is yummy hot or cold.
    - Carrot, celery, cherry tomatoes, snow peas are yummy to snack on. Add some hommus or salsa, they will be OK out of the fridge for a few hours.
    - What about changing around your schedule and eating breakfast at night? Cereal and milk (long life) or muesli, fruit and yoghurt will fill you up for a while.
    - Make a smoothie and put it in an insulated travel mug with some ice.
    - Take soup in an insulated mug that you can drink out of at your desk.

    Good luck!

I know what you mean. I'm not either. If you cannot bring yourself to say it to them, you can just contact the Florida Labor Board, and they will take care of it for you. They won't tell the company who it was that complained (they can't), but the company will have to either change its practices, or pay a massive fine. I see a dinner break in your future!

Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars (more filling than the Fiber One bars, I think)
Sliced Red Bell Pepper (I eat these like chips...taste great and low cal!)
    Trailmix
Cereal (I get my favorite and put it in ziplocks, eat like a snack...Cinnamin Toast Crunch)
Sliced apples with some peanut butter to dip it in!
Most any kind of fruit (banana, apple, plums, berries)...just put in tupperware or ziplocks.

Can you take one of those lunch bags that you can insert a freezer pack into? That'll keep most things cool enough 'till mealtime.

Any recommendations for Trail Mix? I could take a lunchbox, yeah! I'm just conscious about looking like a dork. I know, I need to reassess my priorities. Haha Thank you everyone!

Regardless of whether you are a confrontational person, I would simply ask if you could have a 30 minute lunch break or at minimum, a paid 15 minute. If they say no, just simply say that you were under the impression that after working 6 hours, that you were allowed one. It's not confrontational at all if you deliver it the right way. Besides, it's the law.

You could also consider getting an actual lunch bag so that you can keep cold things cold... such as a high protein tossed salad with egg whites, turkey breast, and fat free shredded cheeses.

Protein bars - there are some that are bigger (and do have more calories) and are meal replacement bars. I often these at work during my first break. I buy ones from Wal Mart that are Premier Protein bars. They are about 270 calories, 8g of sugar and 30g of protein. They don't have to be refrigerated, so they are perfect at your desk food.

Protein shakes - you can mix them with a water bottle (or take a shaker cup and mix it at your desk). I often drink them with water since it is less calories than drinking it with milk.

Banana chips, almonds, peanut and crackers, sliced apples, etc.

    canned tuna
also, if you have coffee breaks or something, what I do is keep oats at work and just chuck a few teaspoons of oats into a coffee (mocha actually).

Look up fool yourself cookies. They are healthy, and you can pack them in a baggie to snack on.

I purchased my two daughters and myself really cute lunch totes through www.thirtyonegifts.com. Actually, a lot of the women that I work with have different types of bags from them. They're fashionable and won't make you feel embarrassed.

Just be sure to do it in writing and document everything. I did this verbally and when I got fired, I had no leg to stand on because the company had better records to cover thier *kitten*. The company found out because they were huge and knew someone who worked for the dept of labor. I don't regret it at all, even though I lost my job and my case. The employees now they get proper breaks and I learned to speak up and keep records.

Ok, the key is to eat small meals every 2 to 3 hours. This will keep you full and also speed up your metabolism which will burn more fat. Each small meal you eat you want to have protein, carbs, and some good fats. Plan ahead the night or day before what you are going to eat. I usually eat lean meats such as skinless chicken breast, lean red meats, turkey, and fish as my protein. Another quick snack I use a lot are protein shakes. Make sure you pick yourself up a shaker from your local nutrition store. There a lot of great options you can choose from. Just do some Google searches and see what you can come up with. Hope this helps you out.
