Yard work

Does anyone have any idea how many calories are burned when raking the yard? I have done quite a bit of that lately and don't seem to find it the exercise search.

I don't log stuff like that (i only log intentional exercise). besides, too many variables to try and calculate.
I just count it as a bonus and maybe have a little desert, knowing i'm covered0 -

I wouldn't log it either!0 -
Best believe i log it! It's amazing exercise. I got out of a plateau this past week because of it, raking and bagging 40 bags of leaves and hauling them to the local land fill. Hello?! Even if it's just a rough estimate and i'm sure i logged the low end of caloric burn no doubt, you're darn right i logged it. Haha It's not something you do everyday. Ex:Raking=500 cal's for 2hrs:)0

Ditto. I don't count yard work/cleaning type things either.

I would count it if it's above and beyond my normal activity level (which I have set at sedentary since I have a desk job) and last more than 30 minutes. Now, I might not eat the calories back, but I would log them regardless. Last year I stacked 22 cords of firewood, and instead of it being a chore, by logging it as activity, I viewed as exercise.
Check out this website for how to measure and count it. This is what I used to figure out what stacking wood was - calorielab.com/burned0 -
I don't count it either. I raked when I was fat and it didn't help me lose weight so I don't use it now. Esp if it's a one of sort of thing...
Sure it's hard, sure you can work up a sweat but it's not getting logged.
I burn wood too...I help with it, do the gardens (flowers) lay the mulch, pull weeds, hand till the soil (it's freakin hard work) but it's not purposeful exercise...I will be spring cleaning too...washing walls etc...I won't log it....It's not purposeful exercise.
If it's not done for exercise I don't log it.0 -

Might as well start logging how much calories you burn breathing every day. Just ridiculous if you feel you need to account for every activity in your day lol.0

I do the same thing. I may not eat back any calories, but if I'm doing something that is well above and beyond my normal activity level I log it. For me this means raking for a long time, digging, hauling cement blocks and dirt bags. Activity that is above and beyond puttering around and planting a few things.0 -
We have a farm and I do a lot of work exercise. When I first joined this site I asked a similar question and someone sent me this link.

Nonsense. If breathing burns as many calories for you as raking the yard, you need to see a Dr. ASAP.0 -
I don't log stuff like that, but I do account for it in my activity level. Maybe I'm not "raking leaves" every day, but when I get home from the office there's always stuff that needs to be done...make dinner (I'm the main cook in the family), get everyone's lunch ready, yard work (I live on almost an acre so I do a fair amount of yard work throughout the week), cleaning, etc.
Basically, yeah...I have a desk job...but I'm not by any means sedentary. Without deliberate exercise I've always had my activity level set to "light active" to account for all of the general chores and what not that have to take place. I could be wrong, but really...I don't think most people who put "sedentary" on their activity level really are.0 -
I would log 'raking leaves - 30+ minutes'. I wouldn't log 'cleaning the bathroom'. I don't always rake the leaves, cleaning the bathroom has been part of the routine forever.0

Thank you so much for everyone's responses. What some of you don't understand that I rake the yard of 5 acres for at least 5 hours twice so far this spring as we have branches and a ton of nut shells from the squirrels. So it is EXERCISE for me. There is a difference between raking and cleaning the house or breathing. But again thank you for your answers.0
