"Processed Meats Declared Too Dangerous for Human Consumption"

http://www.totalhealthbreakthroughs.com/2007/12/processed-meats-declared-too-dangerous-for-human-consumption/

I am just posting this as food for thought. Not looking for a debate. Please draw your own conclusions given the information at hand, and what you research on your own.

I am no doomsdayer nor some sort of paranoid freak, and yes I've read (according to Wikipedia) that "the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in meats containing sodium nitrite [occurs] when meat is charred or overcooked."

But, still, this is just yet again another reason why DH and I are becoming more and more opposed to anything other than pure, WHOLE foods. We're even going to be starting making our own bread this weekend.

I'm from Australia and when i first moved to the States ten years ago my body couldnt tolerate processed meats here - I wont go into detail about my reaction to it - but I used to go to a little deli just down from work where they made a fantastic roast beef sandwich. And silly me thought roast beef was roast beef but apparently it was processed meat. I'm not too smart - it took me about four sandwiches before I realised the cramping and rush to the loo was related to the processed meat.

Ditto. Applegate Farms makes lunch meats with no added nitrates. For turkey bacon, 3 brands I know that are clean are Applegate, Wellshire, and Garrett County. These are all available in Seattle. For other areas, it may vary. Sadly, in some areas, it may be very, very hard to find meats that aren't heavily processed.

Still looking for a good source of nitrate-free canadian bacon. Whole Foods has one at the deli counter, but it's a little out of my way.

Our local supermarket (kind of surpsingly, but also kind of not) actually sells Applegate Farms. But, we're seriously considering just buying a home-sized deli slicer and cooking our own "deli" meats. Why not, right? The cost will surely be recouped in comparison to buying expensive nitrite free brand names. :)

45% of ground beaf contains beef filler cleansed with ammonia.
So do chicken nuggets like ppl give to their kids.
Its because the animals are kept in unsanitary conditions and usually are very diseased. They provide no veterinary care
while raising them to alleviate them of the sickness, so you end up eating sickness and ammonia.
The only way to be sure you're safe?
    Go Vegan!

Okay, now this is a bit paranoid. Sorry, but that's how I feel, and I am sure I am not alone. Someone needs to say it out loud. I am sure maybe this applies to some meat (especially processed/packaged meats that are part of frozen/packaged foods), but most certainly not all, and most definitely not even close to all fresh meats. I know for a fact that our ground meat is ground right there in the local supermarket (which *is* a large, chain market, btw). It's pure and whole meat. So, please don't use scare tactics to try and convince people to go vegan. There's plenty of problems with the way we grow vegetables in this country, too, but no one here is trying to get you to "go meat" by any means. We all have to make the best choices we can for ourselves given what is available to us and acceptable to us. /Rant.
