Gaining weight?!? Really?!?

I'm a 40 yo mom of three. I'm frustrated because I'm down to 1200 calories (and have been doing really well with calories and proportions), and have been using a food scale and really measuring my foods. I also have a Fitbit Charge HR that tracks my movement and is synced with MFP so that it takes away calories if I'm too inactive. I've been losing weight overall, but the last two weeks I've been GAINING by 5+ lbs a week! My Fitbit isn't overestimating (I actually just replaced it because it wasn't logging). WTF?!?!? It's driving me crazy and making it really hard to stay motivated. The Fitbit has helped me see how sedentary I've been, and get more active. I've been working my way up with my steps and trying to be more consistent. I don't work out in a "traditional" way, and am not able to for a variety of reasons. I'm really mostly interested in changing my lifestyle to incorporate activity more holistically. Thoughts?

Muscle?
Water weight?
Broken scales?0 -
The only thing I can think of is possibly a medical condition you don't know about. If it continues I would go see a doctor.0

TOM? High sodium foods from water retention? How long have you been at this 1200cal/day thing?0

Time of month. Have you tried turning it off and back on again? (haha)0

Okay yeah, lets break this down...
You said you've been gaining 5+ pounds a week.. how many weeks are we talking here? 2 or 3? Which means at least 10 to 15+ lbs youve gained possibly more? That is insane for sure, consistent massive weight gain like that is completely beyond water retention, and definitely not fat increase in such a short period of time.
Either you are pregnant or have a very serious medical condition and you need to get thee to a doctor *immediately*.
Now...just in case you are over-exaggerating a bit, and you have not been gaining 5+ pounds a week, and instead...you saw a gain of 5 lbs just for the past week, then water retention is the likely culprit, as it can cause temporary gains just like that. Up your water intake (recommended is half your body weight in oz) and / or cut down on the amount of sodium that you are eating (packaged foods and eating out are sodium bombs) to help your body balance that out.0 -
For you to gain 5 pounds in one week you would have had to consume an additional 2500 calories a day ON TOP of your standard calorie intake. If you haven't eaten those additional 2500 calories per day in this past week I would chalk it up water retention....or like some other posters have said, a medical condition. If you've been faithful to your 1200 calories a day and it's not TOM or sodium bomb causing water retention....I would see a doctor ASAP.0

5lbs a week is a lot to be gaining if you mean more than just the last week. I would talk to a doctor about it.0

water retention. you can't gain 5 pounds a week unless you eat 17,500 extra calories.0

I had a medication that did that to me once. It took a long time to lose the weight afterwards, too. ugggh. Are you on any new meds?0
