The Importance of Socks

i never thought socks were an important component to an effective workout. I was wrong! Recently I was fitted for a new running shoe (Brooks-but I don't run, LOL). We were having problems finding a comfortable shoe for me. I was wearing athletic socks and the sales person said my socks are too big. She threw in a pair of Balega that I LOVE. She also recommended Feetures, which I also bought. I wear a size small.

Do you agree? What brand of socks do you prefer?

I would agree better quality socks make activity more comfortable. I've gotten some blend material socks from Target (C9 brand) that I like, and some smart wool socks too.

They allow my feet to breathe easier, and keeps my feet from feeling so hot and sweaty.

I have a pair of Balegas and agree they are nice. Also a few New Balance and others I do not know the brands of. I probably have 18 pairs of socks just for exercising.

I like the Feetures socks a lot; I used to use them when the only colors you got were white and blue stitching or black with yellow stitching. I love all the color options that are available now! I like the ones without the arch support (or at least far less arch support) because the arch compression gives me horrible aches in my feet.

I used to get socks that were designed specifically for the shoe I run in, but the company stopped making them. They were my absolutely favorite socks, but I wore through 2 of my 3 pairs last summer/fall. It's been sad trying to find a worthy replacement.

Tl;dr: Socks are super duper important and I feel strongly about them.

    Barefoot in the dojo.

Cotton socks work for me for everything else. Nothing fancy. Just plain white cotton crew socks. I buy men's because they are usually thicker. In the winter I like wool when I need to be outdoors for a while.

    Made in USA Thorlos socks!!

You can pick the sock for your activity (walking, long distance walking, running, etc.). Be sure to wash inside out w/ fabric softener to extend the life. You can get them on sale a few times a year when they do a buy 3 get 1 free sale, but I highly recommend them for anyone with foot pain.

Note that the long distance walking socks are THICK so they will not fit in tight shoes.

As a hiker, I'm all about good socks. Nothing like experiencing sock failure 5 miles into a 10 mile hike to drive home the importance of socks :/

My favorites are the Darn Tough wool socks followed by the Thorlos. The Darn Tough coolmax socks are good too but not quite as durable as the wool. I wear them for all exercise, not just hiking. Also, there is nothing wrong with a finely woven wool sock for exercise- they breathe and won't make your feet hot.

If anybody wants to order the Darn Tough socks, just know that they run a little small and have very little 'give' to them since they are so finely knitted.
