running question

I'm all full of questions
I have a hard time running. I do very well on my elliptical machine, except my feet fall asleep just like on the treadmill.
For some reason, I have a hard time breathing, want to vomit, get side cramps, get fatigued after like a minute, thirsty like anything, and it's just the worst exercise on the planet for me. But I want to get better at it. Since I'm going on vacation, running will be my only way of exercising.
How did you all get good at running and all the ailments inovled as I experience?

hmm I don't know if I am much help, but someone once told me to breath in through your nose and out your mouth. I do it that way and it does help some with controlling your breathing. The rest I can't help you with sorry0

keep practicing!! do what you can.. if you can only go half a mile at first, do that..and then try building on that later. brisk walking burns a lot of calories as well, so if you don't like the pain you're getting from running right now, try walking at a fast pace!0

Why don't you try the couch to 5 km plan? I think there is another post on the forum that talks about it.
here's the link. It's a great beginner plan. the biggest problem for beginners is usually trying to go to fast.

How fast are you trying to run? Sounds to me like you're starting out too quickly too soon. I know it sounds really dorky, but I can't run faster than 4.5 or 4.7 mph. When I was running before, I had worked my way up to 5.3 before I quit. Try slowing down. See if that helps.0

I agree. Slow down. Alternate between running and walking until you feel like you can go nonstop. Just because you're running, doesn't mean you have to be in a hurry. Take your time and ease into it. Once you find your "sweet spot," you'll never want to stop. :happy:0

start slow, and practice..practice..practice!!! Running is not easy and it takes a while to get 'good' at it!!0
-
I agree with everyone who said to start out slow.
I suggest you get an Ipod of some sort. Listening to music takes your mind off the running and all of those thoughts that float through your head while you're running. A lot of it is a mind thing. What I mean by that is kind of like when you tell yourself, "Okay...I'm going to run for one more minute," or if you're running on the street and you tell yourself, "I'm going to run to the stop sign or that tree."
You decide how hard and how far you are going to run and how much encouragement you will give yourself to press forward.
I used to not be able to run for 30 seconds and now I am training for my 3rd 5K run. I love it. I started out by telling myself that I would jog for one whole song on my Ipod and then walk a song. Then I went on after a few workouts to work up to two songs and walk one ,and then three, and so on.
Hang in there and don't give up! You can do it!

Thank you so much!! I appreciate your input. You all inspire me. I only do my elliptical and that's great, it's just I need some variation plus I won't have an elliptical at my disposal on my vacation.
I'll try the jog/walk approach first until I find myself being able to jog more and then work the jog a little faster. Maybe that'll help. I'm truly envious of all you runners!0
