You want something light for pre-workouts. Personally, I take just a pre-workout powder with water. But food-wise, 1/2 a banana or an orange is good. Having a little bit of simple carbs, like fruit, is great because it gives your body glucose, which becomes stored energy in the bloodstream, that it will use first during exercise. Also, a cup of coffee is a nice alternative since the caffeine will give you energy, too.

Post-workout, you want to replenish your glucose stores since your body won't start repairing itself until that is taken care of. Thus it's good to get some carbs right after exercise. Oddly enough, one of the best things to have after exercise is chocolate milk. It has a great ratio of carbs to protein and a some sugar to replenish your glucose. Also, some fruit is good, too (maybe the other 1/2 of your banana). And be sure to drink plenty of water.

Well an hour before workout, a light protein like a smoothie with whey protein powder, or some yogurt or cottage cheese. After your workout, within 90 minutes have a complex carb/protein meal like oatmeal and fruit with a scrambled egg or a protein meal bar. Good luck and have fun!
