Beyond Diet - Day 6

This is Day 6 of my new diet "Beyond Diet". I can't say I've lost weight, but have made major improvements in my diet. I've cut my coffee intake from 2 to 1 cup and no creamer. I cut out Diet Pepsi entirely, which was a biggie. Given up all sugar and junk food (a biggie). Increased my water to at least 8+ glasses a day (major biggie), whereas before I was only drinking a couple glasses. I'm eating so much healthier.
My sister-in-law who's also doing this diet said she had lost 5lbs by now. Oh well. she's only 40 and I'm 64. I'm a little discouraged, but will not give up. I'm not supposed to have to count calories, but I feel I need to stick with MFP and log my food in that regard. Now that I'm making good choices I really can see how my medications, age, hormones and not enough exercise are holding me back also. I've developed terrible shin splints which have hindered my usual walking.
I've had horrible, horrible headaches the last few days and wonder if my detoxing from all the sugar, diet soda, and junk food out of my system is causing it.

Why not just do the eat less move more diet? :huh:0

Drink more water when you get those headaches cos its you body's way of telling you you are dehydrating. Good luck!!0

this diet sounds like self torture..
I eat all the foods that you have eliminated and have no issues with losing weight.
why not just do the following:
enter your stats into MFP
eat to that number
get a food scale and weight all solids
hit your micro/macros for the day
move more i.e. walking, running, gym, etc...0 -

There's no detoxing where there's nothing toxic.0 -

Honestly you are way overcomplicating things and many of the biggies arent really that big or having the effect you think they are. I really think you could do yourself a favour by educating yourself and reading the stickies on how dieting and weight loss works.0

Why torture? She's just making healthier choices. I don't think eating junk food, sugary treats and drinking coke by fitting her macros, are gonna make her healthy. Why abt nutrition? I totally agree with the rest, but we have to watch out for nutrition too.

And completely focused on the wrong things if weight loss is the ultimate goal0

You can have both. You don't get extra points for getting more nutrients than your body needs.0 -

Well, I wish I could. I have PCOS and pre-diabetes, so I have to watch my sugar and carb intake. I do agree that portion control should be her main focus, but I still stick with the healthier choices idea. Why drink your calories when you could eat them and not feel like starving an hour later.0 -

because she is eliminating whole groups of foods that she thinks are bad….Do you think it is sustainable to avoid added sugar, ice cream, pizza, etc for the rest of OP's life???
I specifically said that she should eat micros/macros, but that does not mean that she cannot enjoy treats like ice cream, cookies, etc. Hitting macros/micros and eating ice cream are not mutually exclusive. You can eat nutrient dense foods, hit your micro/macro/calorie goal, and still eat treats. I do it every day and my diary is open.

OK you have a medical condition and nowhere in OP's post did she say that she has one. So I don't think its fair to compare your situation to OP's. and what does drinking calories have to do with anything in this thread???
If she does have a medical condition then she would avoid certain foods.

And how much did you pay for this "beyond diet" that restricts you from foods you may love, saying you can never eat them, and makes you believe certain foods are actually toxic to your body??
I eat what I want, when I want, I just weigh my food. I have pizza. I drink creamer in my coffee, I have coca colas -gasp- even NON diet ones if I want. Im taking my mom to a fancy brunch tomorrow, where there will be a carving station, home fries, bacon, cheeses, and desserts. And check it out, I'm losing weight!
MFP is an amazing tool, and it was free. . Take the advice given here, and stop paying for lies and government propaganda! Good luck!0 -
I think the decisions she's making are fine. I'm perfectly fine NOT eating/drinking ice cream, cake, soda (diet or not), and other sugary foods. In fact, I made a similar decision to do so nearly 6 years ago and have never looked back. I don't feel left out or denied.
I'm surprised people are claiming a person doesn't get headaches when decreasing caffeine from one's diet. Even your general practitioner will warn you of that...
A member above mentioned moving more and I certainly agree. Perhaps look into home exercises or stretches and getting some walks in around your neighborhood?0 -

I think the issue is OP believes she should be losing more due to the fact she doesn't eat "unhealthy food"(no such thing, btw). If there is not a deficit of calories at the end, you're going to gain, be it if the calories come from sodas or organic gluten free no antibiotics sugarless chicken breast or whatnot.
It's just a simple reminder that nothing is "forbidden". We are assuming there's no underlying medical conditions where certain things could cause issues, of course. IF someone wants something, and is able to have it, save any medical conditions, they absolutely can using portion control. And for free. If someone doesn't want to eat/doesn't like sugar, fried foods, etc, then. I, don't eat them.
I just wouldn't pay an Internet site to tell me I can never have certain foods and that those foods are why I can't lose weight. Because that's a lie.0 -
Unless you've been adding sugar to it, cutting out the coffee and diet sodas won't make much difference. You've got to get your water from somewhere, it might as well taste good. You don't have to count calories to lose weight, but it sure does make it more predictable.0

The headaches from cutting out the sugar and diet soda (caffeine) should pass fairly soon.
I'd never heard of this diet so I looked it up out of curiousity... the five banned foods on the Beyond Diet are:
Artificial sweeteners, Wheat, Soy milk, Margerine and Orange juice.
Personally I'm all for 'natural food' and choose not to eat those things either (with the exception of wheat), but I think the rationale given by the author is a bit odd http://www.beyonddiet.com/l/12177?food=home
I only got past the artificial sweeteners part; she says apparently because they're chemicals we can't digest them so they're stored directly as fat (?!)... I have to confess I've not heard of this before.

Not a thing wrong with following the beyond diet as long as it makes you feel good AND you don't expect it to magically result in weight loss!
Actually cutting margarine, OJ, soya, and wheat out might cut enough calories to result in some weight loss if you've been eating/drinking enough of them!
Baked goods are often little calorie bombs that I, at least, can eat in huge quantities before I "naturally" stop because i'm full.
When I see them add up in my MFP log, it sort of rings a bell that I can't keep eating them. And OJ. A two litre carton does tend to add a few calories!
But a bit confused about counting or not counting calories if your purpose is weight loss.
Either you are able to stay within your caloric targets and macros without counting, or you need to employ tools that help you reach your targets.
I have a 48+ year track record that proves that "not counting" results in overeating and "gaining weight" for me..
A six month record that I can lose weight at various speeds without counting (and feel quite crappy while doing so).
And a six month record of using MFP and feeling more in control of my destiny and able to make conscious and reviewable decisions about the food I chose to eat.
I am sticking with MFP for now....0 -

Ahahaha, everyone should watch that video for the pure comedy. Fatty chemicals! Lab "food!" Butter increases your metabolism!0 -

Congrats on making some steps forward! Clearly you are at a motivated point, and that usually feels good. I think some of us are picking up that this plan doesn't completely make sense, but we support you in your efforts to get healthier There is some good advice here.0 -

I understand where you are coming from regarding the forbidden food thing. I am on a restricted diet but that is because I am recovering from typhoid and hi carb food effects my stomach.......shock.... I live in Nigeria!!!! I don't see foods as forbidden because I cannot eat then but some people actually carry that thought over that they can never eat those foods again. The truth is you can provide you watch not to go over your calorie intake in maintenance. Nothing is bad for you, its the quantity you eat that is the problem.0 -

I have heard "We can't digest them they get stored directly as fat" before and can't help but laugh at how that is pretty much the exact opposite of what happens when your body can't digest something. Not even to mention that the amount of artificial sweetener in a whole bottle of diet coke is under a single gram, so even if it did get stored as fat that would be nothing.0 -

When I first started MFP, I logged every single thing I ate without limiting my food intake because I wanted to see how much I was really eating. It turned out I was eating way over TDEE. What I learned was to use moderation in all food and cut nothing out. That's how my diet journey actually started.
If you're after weight loss, I encourage you to try and practice moderation with your coffee creamer, diet Pepsi. and all the other foods you love. It takes practice, but once you realize you can eat normal foods in moderation (weighing foods and measuring liquids is a plus to doing this), you will see the difference.
As for not counting calories- since eat at a calorie deficit is required to lose weight, I suggest you start counting calories to see how much you are really eating. You can try any diet in the world and not lose weight if you are eating too much. However, you can eat anything you want at a calorie deficit and lose weight.
However, if you are cutting out things just to see if you can do it, or if you believe that cutting out certain foods will help you reach your weight goal, then you've got to what you've got to do. But, for me, moderation was certainly the key.

She mentioned reducing coffee and diet soda, which have no (or almost no) calories.
I think that if she feels better doing that she should, nothing wrong with it, but for me trying to cut out coffee or diet soda (if I'd drank much of it, coffee's always been my favorite indulgence) while also trying to cut calories would have been unhelpful. It was better to focus on the excess calories and understanding where they were coming from.
For me, focusing on sweets and diet pop/coffee would have left in most of my excess calories.0 -

There's no reason why OP couldn't do both... if you're concerned that the weight isn't coming off as you'd like, follow the diet AND log all the calories on MFP at least until you're confident about portion sizes etc.0
