Hi I'm new here and I'm confused. Fitness pal says I should be consuming 1980 calories a day . I thought it was kind of high especially because I'm trying to loose weight I was told that you are suppose to consume anywhere from 700-1200 calories a day....can any one shed some light?

Less than 1000= No. Just No. Very unhealthy unless medically supervised.

I eat around 1800 and I am currently averaging just over 1lb per week loss.

    What are your stats?

Figured into the right amount of calories are your current weight, height, age and how many lbs. you want to lose. MFP will do that for you once you enter this info (but I'm assuming you have).

You could also go to www.healthyeater.com and plug in your stats. The site will also tell you how many calories to consume a day in order to lose weight.

But under 1,000 is WAY to low!

I believe if you put in your weight, height, and exercise level then you should TRUST the calorie intake MFP recommends. MFP says I should eat 1,000-1,200 calories.

Though I have to be honest... I physically can't eat that much on a daily basis... mostly due to the types of foods I like. I do have calorie binge days and that certainly slows my weight loss. Currently I average around 2-4 lbs a week. I also moderately exercise at home daily... this affords me an additional 200+ calories per day.

I would stay true the what MFP outlines for you... there's thousands of successful members on this site that prove it's a safe method of losing weight.

eating less than 1200 calories a day is not recommended because it makes it difficult to get all the nutrients you need if you eat less. If it tells you to eat 1980 you can eat less than that and it could help speed up your weight loss.

Without knowing your height, weogh, age, and activity level I can't comment on the goal you received, but I can say that 1200 calories is generally considered the minimum for females medically.

Realize that the goal is not to eat as little as possible, lose the weight quickly by losing a lot of muscle with the fat, only to put even more fat on when you stop. Instead, eat as much as you can while still losing weight at a moderate pace so that the majority of weight lost is fat, and you have learned to eat at a reasonable calorie level.

Eat 1200 is too little for the vast majority of people.

Make sure you entered your information correctly, then follow the calorie goal you are given measuring your food carefully (no estimates) for 4 weeks. That should give you a good idea of how to progress.

You also have to take into consideration the caloric needs to just keep your heart beating and organs functioning. I thought it was way too much to go with 1384 calories a day (MFP) but if I go to the gym and do a 500-700 calorie burn, I need to "pay back" my body for the energy spent during the workout. I find it easiest to look at calories as energy...Technically, that's what they are.

MFP recommends a bare minimum of 1200 calories for every female member, regardless of stats (1500 for men since 2014). There have been some glitches lately, so if I were you I would re-submit my goals to get a proper recommendation.
