You have to put in workouts to MFP and let it sync with Fitbit. It gets messed up if you do it from Fitbit.0

What workouts? It doesn't count strength training or cycling very well. You have to push the button to start the timer. OR (not and, or it counts it twice), log your time and exercise in the Fitbit site.
It says this clearly in the documentation that comes with it. It will still calculate your heart rate and everything - I don't input my cardio, as it does just fine with that, but I have to input my lifting, as it has no idea.
If it's not counting your heart rate - move it up on your arm a little bit, and make sure that it is cinched snug.

You can learn more in the Fitbit Users group: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/1290-fitbit-users

If you have an iPhone put it in the health tracker. There's a spot to add calories burned and it will track over to this app as long as you allow access in your settings. Hope it helps0
