PCOS and weight loss

I have PCOS and haven't had a period in 17 years (since I was 27). Since I've been losing weight, I feel as though I'm coming back into a cycle again. This week I had period-like cramps, gained weight, and had all of my old PMS symptoms. I know that estrogen is stored in our fat cells and wonder if the release of estrogen during my weight loss could affect me like this? Has anyone else suddenly gone back into menstruation after a long hiatus?

The first thing recommended to treat PCOS symptoms is weight loss and regular exercise, so it makes perfect sense0

I have PCOS and seem to have a tipping point around 160lb - above that my periods go haywire. Since dropping to nearer 140lb I've got the closest to a regular cycle I've ever had. We'll all have different trigger points, but yes - losing weight is likely to alleviate symptoms.0

I had PCOS but have been asymptomatic for it since losing 150 pounds. Your theory makes perfect sense, and it has been proven that weight loss can minimize or reverse PCOS, I certainly found this in my case! Good luck in your efforts, wishing you much success!0

I have PCOS but I take a very high dose of BC to negate the really really bad periods I get with it. So far it's been good and I'm no longer anemic. I wonder if that will happen to me when I get closer to my weight goal, maybe I can lower the BC.0

Huh, I wonder if this is why I've never had the irregularity I see other PCOS sufferers speak of, my weight has never gotten to the tipping point (and the time it was high enough that it might have I was on BC). Like, I knew weight loss was key to alleviating symptoms, but never put two and two together that that may have been why I never got that one.0

Yes - this is why your menstrual cycle is hopefully coming back. If you have not seen an ob/gyn about this problem, please do. Going that long without a cycle with pcos can lead to cancer. Also - be prepared - this may be the cycle from you know where if it has been that long.0
