Dehydration or something else?

Hi guys,

I've recently started jogging/running/interval training/power walking etc etc (depending on how energetic I'm feeling at the time!) and I've been feeling quite good while doing it. But today I went out and my calves were really stiff and didn't seem to warm up at all (did 3km) and my fingers got very swollen and uncomfortable. When I tried to run I felt like my legs weighed about 50kg each. I was thinking that maybe I didn't drink enough water the past couple of days - I did have a can of soda yesterday which is a rarity and I hadn't been focusing on getting my 2L like in the past few weeks. Would dehydration cause this or could it be something else? Ie nutrition maybe?

    I felt exactly the same as this on my run yesterday, I got out of breath a lot quicker than normal too!
    I did drink my 2L yesterday though so i put it down to just being generally tired from a couple of late nights. My time was only a minute or so slower than normal though so I didnt do too badly but I think it took ALOT more effort than normal......... so I dont have a better answer but at least you know its not just you! x

    Only thing I have been told in the past is the feeling of heavy legs can be attributed to over training, so maybe take a rest day and see if you feel better then.

    Water intake is important, so make it a focus anyway just in case.

    If this is something you've recently started doing, this is likely your body adjusting a bit. Also, do you actually stretch? I get a ton of tightness (mostly in my strike leg, through my calf) if I am not taking the proper time to do a bit of dynamic stretching before and a full, 15 minute stretching session post run/walk/whatever.

    The other trick, especially if it's actual cramping almost, is to watch your potassium intake. As easy as eating a banana a few days a week.

    It's also important to note that we all just have bad runs, it just happens.
