Weight Loss Patterns

I keep seeing that weight loss is nonlinear but also see that we should lose at a steady rate. All the chats people post show a great of weight lost at the beginning and then tapering off towards the end of their journey. What your experience?

It will tend to go faster at first and get slower at the end because you burn more calories at first and fewer at the end. But weight loss is nonlinear because water retention, etc. puts a lot of noise into it.

I just got back on mfp about 2 weeks ago and I'm losing quickly, but I expect to slow down soon. I lost 5 lbs just in the first week. I'm assuming it's probably half water weight.

I lost consistently when I was more over weight. Once I got down to a healthier weight range, nope. It came off all over the place.

So when someone says they lost weight at rate of 1pound/week they are averaging their entire weight loss over their entire time?

Ive only been at it for a few months now but for me it goes up and down, Sometimes I will not lose anything for a week or 2 and then the next week ill drop like 2-3 lbs. I would say that when people say a "steady rate" they probably mean more of an average over a period time rather than like, .2 lbs a day.

I've been logging my weights. You can see for yourself. I lost faster at first because I had more weight to lose. However, my results are fairly consistent. I've yet to have an up week. I've yet to have an even week.

I suppose that depends on the person making that statement, but I would say I'm losing .5-1 lb/week now, but was at 2+ in the beginning. It is definitely coming off in a jerky pattern right now too--2 pounds, then nothing for 2-3 weeks.

@Pu_239 That's really amazing to see it over time. Sometimes is hard to visualize just looking at day to day numbers.
