Thinking about Zumba...

I am thinking about attending a Zumba class for the first time tomorrow. I am pretty overweight and have mainly just been walking for exercise and playing Dance Central from time to time on my Xbox. I guess I am just nervous that I might pass out in the middle of the class. I know lots of people are doing Zumba on here and love it. How was your first time? Would you suggest I wait until I lose a little more weight or get into a little better shape before I try it out or should I just go for it?

just go at your own speed , do what you can , catch your breath when you have to , then carry back on
  • I think you should go for it and take it at your own pace. You can always leave whenever you want too. Maybe you will love it!!

I do the DVD's at home, and what I suggest is that you just work at your own pace - push yourself - but stop before you pass out!!
I must say I have not felt like passing out yet - it is a bit tough on the knees - but then mine is a bit older (and more worn most probably) than you - again - keep the impact to what you feel comfortable with ... you still want to be able to walk in the morning :-)

Give it a go - it is really good fun - and gets the heart pumping!

I love, love, love Zumba! It's such an amazing burn and the hour flies by because you're having so much fun. In my Zumba classes, we have people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. I was nervous at my first Zumba class, but quickly got over it. I introduced myself to the instructor, said I was new, and she gave me some great tips. Don't worry so much about the upper body your first time. If you get the moves down, great, if not, focus on keeping up with the lower body movements. Keep your knees bent to avoid injury (recovering from this very thing as we speak) and wear supportive shoes that allow you to pivot with ease.

I would totally go for it! Be warned though that you may become hooked!

I was 289 when I started six months ago (now 209). It took me a couple of times to get the steps, and I felt very uncoordinated. Everyone was too busy having fun concentrating on their own steps to care.

Zumba is so much fun. Start slow.. and modify the moves if you need to.. if they jump just do a hop. Eventually you will learn all the moves. Take a drink of water between each song if you need to. Rest if you get tired. It took me a couple months to be able to finish the whole 45 min class. Good luck and have fun!

Don't wait, just go for it! Zumba is wicked fun =)

Takes time to get the routine down so relax and concentrate on moving just 1/2 your body at a time. As tempted as you may be to go to the back of the class, stay up front. One you'll be able to see the instructor, and two you'll be able to feel the music.

Your instructor should be able to offer modifications, even if he/she doesn't, you know your body best and you can hit it as hard or as easy as you need to.

    Good luck!

I love Zumba and one of the great things about it is being able to adjust it to your needs. I had a hysterectomy and bladder repair a few months ago and am not supposed to lift more than 20 lbs, do ab work, or jump but I just alter it to what works for me. Women of all sizes and some men too at my gym, at the other place I zumba it is dark with no mirrors so even better. Enjoy!

Thanks! I will definitely go ahead and give it a try. I will just have to watch out for my right knee.

Go! it is so much fun! I just did my first class this week and it was a FUN and a GREAT BURN. Go slow and at your own pace until you get comfortable with the moves. Great way to get active. = )

It is a come as you are class. Come at whatever weight, coordination & plan to just have fun. Everyone is focused on their own steps & you will see people of all shapes & sizes there. just slowly try to get the steps.. which might take a few classes.. but once they start falling into place.. you will enjoy it more... your sexy side will start coming out & make you smile.

Remember it is all about you & no one (including you) gets to pass judgment... you are doing it for you.. & that is all that matters:) Have a BLAST & give it a few classes before you decide how you feel about them:)

I'd say save your money and just dance at home.
it's not that hard to come up with some fun, calorie burning moves!
