Really? That's your final answer?
Hmm.. sounds funny, but that was the case with me. And I had developped an enormous thirst for coke and similar sweet drinks while I almost never drink anything sweet.0 -
I guess all the "healthier, better quality, non-insulting Austrailian foods" lead to weight gain too. Interesting.
.
I agree that there is a lot of not so good quality foods available here, but there are many healthy foods too!
I am trying to take off weight because I ate to much period!
If I over ate the most healthiest foods and went over caloric allowance, I'd still be fat!
Maybe I'm hormonal today and overly sensitive. Shrug.
Glad to know Australia has all this superior food. I guess I will start an import business0 -
That does sound hormonal
Seriously though, I was very clear that I didn't have access to proper supermarkets when I was in the States and Canada. I'm sure there's brilliant food around, and with such a big country with large agricultural areas there must be masses of fresh produce. It just wasn't available where I looked. Instead I got products with ingredients lists longer than than... uh.. very long anyway0 -

Yes I eat back all my exercise calories. That's partially why I work out so hard, so I can "afford" chocolate every night LOL

I use a polar F7, I also have a fitbit but I rely on my polar for logging exercise calories

Vacations prove weight loss is stupid and doesn't make sense. I gained 20lbs in one week on my vacation a few weeks ago. Yes. You read that right. 20lbs in one week. 10 came off in the first few days but as of today I'm still 7lbs more than before I left. I know, you're thinking, "well you probably ate non-stop for 7 days. Nope. A few beers on the beach and barely ate until dinner. So that equals 3500 calories over a day? Nope. But still gained. Sometimes there's just no logic to it all.
I lost 4lbs on my vacation - because I moved a lot and watched what I ate - eating lots of fresh salads and minimal alcohol
give it a couple of weeks and then reassess .. you may not have eaten non-stop but you probably went over your targets coupled with air travel and water retention ..0 -

There is a difference between downright insulting and berating a country vs being critical. And yes there is a great range of good foods in America BUT it is more challenging to find the good, high quality stuff. One of my friends in az who is extremely conscious of healthful foods shops at a huge array of stores to get all the best she can. Whereas here in Oz you can get amazing quality just in one or two stores. They are much more strict about the food quality here. Truth. If I recall correctly, Oz won't even import American meats because of all of the hormones. If people choose to be insulted by the reality of this then that's fine but a little misguided?
Stutba I wish you well too, thank you. We will just have to agree to disagree. Yes, and I love Canadian food ... I've got a list of things I'll eat when I'm there. But as you say, it is so easy to find a wide variety of good choices here in Australia. And on my walk between uni and work, I often drop into Coles for fruit and also dinner choices. Then cross the road to the Asian market for more.

We drove. I can see going over but 3500 over a day? Not likely. As I said though, there's seldom any real logic to weight loss. I ate at a deficit from the end of February until the week of my vacation. Got down to 222. Now I'm 229. It simply defies logic that I hate 3500 calories over each day. CICO may work but no one seems to ever explain why it work so poorly for some and so skewed in one direction instead of the other. If I can't lose 7lbs of fat in a week why can I gain 7lbs of fat in a week? Anyone? McFly? Hello?

But honestly? My vacation last July is what totally messed me up too. I was down to my lowest just before I left (2 pounds from my goal). Now close to a year later I'm still 1 pound heavier. No....when I started my weight loss for the last time I was at 205 and your height...my calories for 1lb a week were 1600 (including exercise) but it wasn't a lot of exercise to be frank.

Weight loss is not linear. Some weeks you do everything right but maintain—or even gain. Others you lose a whole lot in a "whoosh."
Take measurements and progress photos. Have other metrics, like strength & endurance.
If you have a Fitbit or Withings account, sync it (for free) with TrendWeight.com to see the trend without the "noise" from water weight.

Chronic undereating will not get you to goal any more quickly. The less you have to lose, the more slowly it comes off. That's just the way the human body works. A healthy, sustainable loss is .5 lb. per week for every 25 lbs. you're overweight.
The more you lose (congratulations on your loss!), the smaller the margin of error. I've logged for 900 days straight, and I don't consider myself "beyond the Sexypants post." I reread it regularly to help me tighten up my logging and get back on track.0 -
I don't see anything too strange in your story except that you haven't lost anything in the 3 weeks since you got home. I would have to guess it is just water retention. Do you only weigh yourself once a week or every day? Since you are 5'7", you should be losing significantly on 1500.
I don't see any America bashing here, but in the U.S., I think it is easy to find almost whatever food you can imagine if you live relatively close to a major city. That is not true of most of the other places I have been to in the world. Hormone-free, gluten-free, grass-fed (and whatever other buzzwords you can put on the label) meat can be easily found. Comparing fresh produce isn't fair because Aussies live closer to the equator and have a better growing season. If you just came to the U.S. a month ago, we aren't even anywhere near peak growing season yet. Most of our produce is coming from hothouses or is trucked in from 1000 miles away right now. We can only get the really tasty local grown stuff in late spring through early fall here in the DC region.0 -

I've lost way more than my ticker indicates. I'm beyond the sexypants thread. I know how to lose weight. I just want logical explanations about why it's so skewed one way. Why does eating what feels like next to nothing produce only a modest loss but eating probably only slightly more than TDEE (seriously, there is no way I ate 3500 calories over a day) produce a gain of 7lbs (more if you count the water). Where is the science there?
Never underestimate the magnitude of water retention. When I am very glycogen depleted, I can gain up to 12 pounds the day after a refeed (in one day!), and that is when I only go over TDEE by a few hundred.0 -

........ I never said aussie food doesn't lead to weight gain.....I never said you can't find good quality food in America. Lol You are creating strawman arguments and putting words in my mouth.......there's a lot of crap here too and oz has an obesity problem as well. I was simply saying, once again, that the general overall standard of food quality here is higher. Maybe you're too busy being offended by everything to understand this?
And it's not just the fact that we have possibly more of an abundance of produce....it's also the culture. More people here, FROM MY OBSERVATIONS, know how to cook. There is a lot more emphasis on healthful eating as well.
And btw I gained weight while here because i went through a severe depression and I ate the JUNK.
Anyway i'm not responding to you anymore because I'm finding your attitude to be increasingly abrasive I wish you well.0 -
I lived in Australia for almost 5 years, put on a lot of weight when I returned to the USA. I agree the quality of food Downunder, New Zealand's is fab too, is awesome. You have to have access to Whole Foods and farmers' markets to get anything like it here. And you can not get the fresh food quality here unless you're in Alaska or Hawaii. I bought food for a day or two at a time, it was easy to do down there.
I put on a lot of weight in AU, but I easily dropped it when I finished pigging out on all the wonderful new foods and wines. I finally realized all the goodness wasn't going away and just ate normally again, that and beach walking resulted in the easiest weight loss of my life.
USA has so much added sugars and salt. The poster referring to European foods has the wrong point of reference. European markets are good, but even they are not the high quality and affordable level of AU and NZ food stuffs.
Sassy, just eat the great veggies, fish, & lean meats with some of the magnificent fruits that are in every neighborhood and you'll drop those extra lbs. Good for you, doing the lifting as well.0 -

Yeah that's exactly it....it's so good you understand what I'm saying. There are fresh fruit and veg markets EVERYWHERE here. Even the bread they bake fresh at my local Coles, I mean it's a variety of high quality breads from white to sourdough to seeded and whole grain. My mom always gets excited when she comes to visit me cause of that bread (not that I eat any of it anymore lol)!
Ugh YESSS the pickles. I've gotten used to them, I guess the saltiness offsets the sweetness a bit. Don't even TRY the mayo. It's god awful. A good brand you can find in most specialty European deli's is Tomy.0 -

No, this is not "proof". This is just your experience. I've been at maintenance for years, but 3 years ago when I went to Maui for a week I came home 5 lbs. lighter. Three years before that I went on a 4-day work related trip and lost 5 lbs. For some of us not having our regular, go-to foods around cause us to eat less. Plus, there's generally increased activity.0 -

I weigh myself every few days lately to get an idea. But usually once a week. I also found that my Body went through almost what seemed like a detox period where, once I started eating good foods again, my body was NOT reacting well. I guess it was getting rid of all the crap I had eaten while on vacation. I'm gonna check how I fare on 1600 a week from now.
That is a very very very good point about the produce season. I wasn't just referencing produce though, but foods in general.0 -

Steady state cardio? Hmmmmm......i just googled it. I guess so? My workouts consist of lifting plus 36 minutes of turbojam three days a week, Endurance and cardio and ab work one hour a week, and the other 3 days a dance workout like Richard Simmons or Shaun T's rockin body for about an hour each. I exercise every day because otherwise I would eat the house down. Also means more chocolate lol.
Can you give me an example of what percentage you take from your workouts? Most days I burn around 600ish calories.
Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah I don't think this has anything to do with USA vs UK. I think it's more that you've lost 110lbs already, you're smaller so you're obviously going to be losing weight more slowly now. That's normal and to be expected, and you should embrace that so as to minimize lean muscle loss.
1lb/week sounds like a GREAT pace to be on.0 -

It seems like a long time but of course weight loss is not linear...add in exercise and you will be surprised at how many calories you could eat and still lose.
Love my chocolate...I eat 1 bar of Cadbury dairy milk almost every night...not sure I could have done this for as long as I have without it...and I don't mean just losing but maintenance as well...good luck with the rest of your weight loss and if you ever get to Canada gotta eat a poutine with cheese curds...from Quebec...0 -
I live in Canada, the Toronto area and before that the Niagara area, and you definitely have to know where to buy the "higher quality" food. I don't know what Australia is like, but for example, if you want high quality artisan bread here, you wouldn't buy it at a supermarket - even the more expensive supermarkets. You would go to a bakery, a good one. Same for cakes and pastries. If you wanted better fruits and veggies, you would drive out to a farmer's market or a road side stand beside a farm and find something better (maybe). For meat, you could probably do that same and find a farmer or go to a local butcher you trust. For restaurants, you would need to search Urbanspoon and find ratings on places for food quality. So it's more work here to get higher food quality, I agree. It's easier to go to a grocery store and get it all at one place. I don't believe we have hormones in our meat/milk in Canada. I've been to Montreal twice, and the restaurant quality is better on average, but you still need to check out the ratings online. I think the supermarkets are about the same in that you would go to a butcher, baker, farmer to get higher quality foods.0

Yeah no sorry, i had just woken up and misspoke. However, my point about bmr still stands...eat too far under it for too long and you will burn out.0 -
I think the quality of food and the produce really depends on the region of the U.S. you happen to be in. Where I live (in the southern U.S.) there are tons of farms, so we have lots of roadside produce stands and farmers markets full of local produce, and it's CHEAP!
We also have lots of little local shops like bakeries and stuff. I've never been to Australia but I somehow doubt there are more farms in Australia than there are here.
Photo I took of one of our local farmers markets:
Small farmers market haul from last week:
From the same farmers market as above: bread from a local bakery, honey, and berries all locally made or grown here in Mississippi
