Hi, I've been doing really well with excercise (walking only as recently had shoulder surgery) with a 4kg loss in a month. My only issue is after a brisk walk on the walking machine I have a strong ammonia smell in my nostril.......I walk 7 to 10km a day

That's a new one. From what I've heard, ammonia breath is related to liver problems; but I don't see what that has to do with working out. Is it the same way after all kinds of strenuous exercise? Best to get it checked out.

    Okay , it's more likely this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25189784
The effects of vigorous exercise (4000 m indoor row) in 13 participants were studied and increases in breath ammonia were observed in all participants.

Are you on a low-carb diet? Here's an answer for you. It's the breakdown of amino acids from proteins in your blood.

When I had anorexia and was restricting to +-400 kcal a day I also smelled like ammonia, are you eating enough?

You are in Ketosis... Ketosis is a metabolic state where most of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis where blood glucose provides most of the energy. .. Bottom line eat more Carbs and it will go away.

Thanks every one... I'm eating 4,000 to 5000 kj a day but maybe not enough carbs. I have cut breads out of my diet but certainly still eating well. What is a good low cal hi carb food that is a good easy snack?

Ammonia breath can be a sign of kidney problems. Talk to your dr. Better safe than sorry.
