Choosing Your Friends

Hello MFP. As most of you know, I only start a topic when it is near to my heart, and those who are my friends know what topics I am most passionate about. Heath and Friendship.
I post this because I know a dear, wonderful soul who made a brave step to be open about her struggle with an eating disorder. As a result, she has lost several friends. This is not what support and friendship is about. I have addressed this MANY times and will again. Being friends with someone who is currently or past anorexic, bulimic can be difficult. If you cannot offer that support or hear those painful details then you need to do this research before adding them.
When you choose to add someone as a friend, or when you are presented with a friend request, I encourage you to check out that person's information on the sidebar. Look at their photos, their diary, and their past forum posts if you can. See if that person is really someone you want to be friends with, as being 'de friended' is not a fun thing to experience.
I've been on here almost a year and have several ANA/MIA friends, both current and in recovery. I am fiercely protective and will not tolerate anyone bullying, harassing, or singling them out.
Thank you for your time, Dark Angel :flowerforyou:

Very well put! How could someone be so shallow or whatever to defriend someone when we're ALL here for support?0

Standing ovations to you my dear. ED's are not a reason to de-friend another.
I was a lucky one to have a doctor diagnose my ED early enough and got me on the road to recovery.0 -
If any one of those friends wants/needs more friends who WILL be supportive of them and try to help them be strong enough to pull through, send them my way. It's sad that some people can be so cruel... But I'll be here and NON judgmental.0

Well said. I approve of this statement. Individual lifestyle choices belong to that individual. It really shouldn't affect anybody else in the aspect that being associated with those people create tension. No one deserves to be discriminated against because of their present or past experiences.0

As I said on the other thread about this same incident:
Some people find that it's very difficult to maintain their own health while supporting someone with an Eating Disorder, usually folks who are still working to recover or who are teetering on disordered eating themselves. So it's not always about being 'shallow'; rather, some people find that they are jeoaprdizing their own health or recovery by reading about someone else's active disorder.
Again, I wasn't involved in the incident that has provoked so many threads. Just pointing out that there may have been a legitimate reason for someone to move away from a friendship. Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt-maybe on both sides.0 -
very well worded. we all have our individual challenges and we all need support. my heart goes out to your friend.0

Well said I agree with you. This is the foolishness that makes people want to hurt themselves or worse. I have no love for people who belittle others for any reason...thanks for the post.0

Nicely put, DA. I love this site and would hate to think someone would not be supportive of any ED's. Saddens me that anyone on a fitness support site couldn't understand a disorder so aligned with being overweight (as many of us feel we are). Your friend has hopefully overcome his/her ED or at least is managing through it (not sure anyone ever overcomes that totally right?) and obviously has strong friends as well to support him/her. I hope they will find strength in that to push past it. Good of you to support so fiercely. We should all have friends that strong and loyal.0

I don't know what I could possibly add to what's already been said here. I agred and will fiercely defend as well as support my friends here.

Hey should not that be a reason to friend someone--THis is My FITNESS Pal--not My GET SKINNY LIKE ME Pal. Fitness includes eating and getting to a healthy point, and for some people that means learning and overcoming eating disorders. I have seen several young ladies on hear that have recognized that and they are trying to gain weight and maintain that--I applaud them as much as people like me trying to loose and maintain.0 -
