OK so the first thing to do is breath. You seem to be freaking out and that won't help. My partner is type 1 and been living with it for years. With modern medical advances diabetes is very maintainable. Secondly you need to go back to your doctor or find a diabetic specialist. Education is the best thing you can do for yourself. Type 1 and type 2 are different and handled differently by docs. Dont think of your medication as a cure, you may never "get rid" of your diabetes. Diet is very important. You have to start counting carbs and such, so get used to looking at labels. You need to push water as well. I don't really know your current dietary and physical habits so I can't really give you any specific advice other than if you like your chips and twinkies you'll have to give them up. Exercise is important but don't just go gung ho about it. Its more of a shift in over all activity. Going to the gym is great but don't think that going everyday for this or that many hours is going to lower your sugars or cure your diabetes. The best advice I can give is to start seeing a diabetic specialist and ask any questions you may have. You could also see if there are any classes occurring in your area. You'll meet other diabetics and learn a lot. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Also, as exercise goes start out slow. Walk a half mile, or mile (I'm guessing you're sedentary??) and see how it goes. Go from there. One step at a time, ok?

    We've all been there.

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes type 2 as well. However, my doctor chose to try dietary changes, exercise and weight loss as a first approach rather than medication. She sent me to a nutritionist who specializes in diabetes.

I have dropped my levels quite a bit since January, into normal levels (which does not erase my diagnosis), and am managing without medications. However, I strongly recommend you seek out help from professionals. Ask your doctor to recommend a nutritionist to work with, find a trainer (my local Y has personal trainers that are familiar with diabetes) to help you focus and build a routine. Find classes at your local library, hospital, clinics, etc. that can help you learn about your condition.

It is serious, yes, but it can be managed and you can live a long, happy and healthy life despite the diagnosis. Don't think of it as some doom cloud looming over you but it does mean changes. You may be able to stop medications with diet and exercise, you may not. Everyone is different.

The first step is breath and seek help. You can do this!

Please dont be scared, its happened now so you will just have to learn to live with it. My understanding is i might you can minimise the impact and easily lead a normal life. Its possible to reverse, but not easy.

There are groups on MFP that you can join.

Its up to you to read up on it and then make some changes for yourself.

You may want to set up an appointment with a nutritionist at your local hospital, they can sometimes help and have classes that you can attend and/or support groups might be offered, our local hospital had a large group that were able to attend classes every Thursday for an hour after they met with a nutritionist at the hospital. The nutritionist offered this group to the obese/overweight/pre diabetic or diabetic so it was mixed. They can also be a live person you can check in with if you need support and they'll probably know resources in your local area

If your insurance needs a referral you can ask your doctor for one to a nutritionist.
