So I managed to lose some weight, but I'm still all squishy! I lost the majority of my weight by just diet and walking around more.

So I was thinking with new years I would start going to the fitness center at school ( membership is free with tuition).I'm kinda scared though...all those machines and the people are mostly guys that make you wanna say " Woah! You got here on a football scholarship didn't you?.....So scary:frown: "

I can't get a friend to come with me...can you people talk me into it please? That or paying money for a member ship at Curves or something

Hmmm, I would love to be able to go to a gym right now...but sadly, it just isnt in the budget:cry: I understand the reasons for your "fears", but if it were me...I would go anyway! I think I would feel more self-conscious if it were the women there who looked like football players!!
GOOOO!!! I think you'll be glad you did:flowerforyou:
    Just my humble opinion:blushing:

Maybe if you go there where you can go for free, start talking to some of the other people that work out there and get to know them so you don't feel so self conscious and ask them for some pointers or something like that! Then you will have friends there instead of people that you think are just going to look at you funny!

The gym can be intimidating but just focus on yourself, not others around you. Trust me, I felt the same way and I'm sure we're not alone. I agree though, it is nice to have someone to go with you, and that's why I stopped going a few years back. Now I would give anything to be able to get in there! Concentrate on you and your goals, maybe bring an ipod or something that way you won't feel so "alone". You'll turn into "that girl" at the gym, you know the skinny one with her headphones that jumps on the treadmill (running) for like two hours, making all of the rest of us jealous. You can do it!

I don't know.....right now I'm the short, chubby, brunette in the highschool gym uniform. the one she wore when she was 30 pounds heavier. Give me a couple of months and I might dream of wearing spandex (and looking good)

A GYM TID-BIT. There are TONS of people at the gym who know a ton about lifting weights and working out and a good portion of them are excited and willing to share and show their knowledge with you. The task at hand it to find those people!! A good idea is to talk to the people in charge of the gym area and see who's available to show you a thing or two. OR...if you have the money pay $10 for a training session with someone. Yes, it is that cheap when you are asking another student who needs the extra cash.

The hardest part of working out in a gym, is getting there for the 1st time.

My friend was a trainer. We were talking one day and I told him I didnt join a gym because all you buff hot guys are looking at us chubbies like "Why bother?" He was AMAZED!

He said they say things like " Wow, that lady has been here every day!" or "Look at her, I wish my sister would do that!"

He also said there are jerks everywhere, but like Chel said most of the buff ppl would love to help someone whip into shape....gives them creds with their friends!

    DO IT!!:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

I agree the toughest thing is going there the first time. I actually expect that once you go it will be a lot less intimidating. Put on some work out clothes and go, don't worry about doing anything that looks confusing. Do something you are really comfortable with like the treadmill. The next time you go try one new thing, just keep doing that until you get a routine. During Christmas break it's probably a lot less crowded. Also I would expect that there is some someone there who can show you how to use the equipment. Perhaps you should take a physical fitness class next semester to learn how to use the equipment.
  • people usually spend their time watching themselves rather than others!
try it there and if u don't like it try it elsewhere

when i join my gym a few months back, i got an hour free with a trainer. i had told the trainer i was more afraid of being there of the way i looked and didn't want people watching me thinking not so nice things. he told me the the guys could care less, they are too wraped up into their own looks and workouts. now for the girls some of the them watch you and you can tell what they are thinking. most look just like me and are there for their workouts. i have only seen a few of the gym bimbos, as i call them. who are there just to lean on the machines and chat with each other and try to pick up the guys. i have even heard some guys say to some girls that they are too skinny and don't need to be working out as hard, to lose weight, but, to maintain. that surprised me coming from a gym rat guy.
go to the gym and don't worry that people are looking at you. have fun. i really like going to the gym.
