Meanies?
9 times out of 10 this site is full of positivity but does anyone else find it a bit mean and discouraging to see so many "closed" groups? Surely everything on here is open and free.
Seems to be lots of this happening lately. Feel a bit sorry for the noobies!

What do you mean groups? Threads?0

yes I agree, I know what you mean. Closed groups are wrong.:grumble:0

It's their business. They can share what they wish to share. Everything does not have to be "public knowledge."0

People have to close off the challenge groups to keep things manageable. It's not mean whatsoever, it's a sane thing for the organizers to do. If they left groups open, they could end up getting way too big and become impossible to manage.
If you want to be part of a challenge but it's closed, wait around for the second part or start your own. There's also plenty of groups out there that are completely open that you can join. I think it's a bit unfair to call people mean for realizing they can only manage a set amount of people and not creating a ton of extra work.0 -
sorry if you find it upsetting. the reason for having closed groups is to keep it small so you can get to know each other better and in return encourage and motivate each other more.I belong to a closed group that is 20 of us all over 40 with 50 lbs or more to lose. It helps to become closer and get to know each other also we all are the same age range ...........0

I'm still confused ... there are "groups" on here? I thought we only could to threads/forum posts ... how do you start a group?0

Precisely the problem is that there are no groups. So, people end up creating a public thread, but not accepting members to their group. The problem of seeing these threads marked "closed group" would be solved if there were a way to create groups or challenges!!0 -

A group is a thread that exists solely for individuals with similar goals. Most are weight related (300+, 40-50 to lose, etc), while others can be different, such as I'm a member of the zombie survival club (completely open and always looking for new members, by the way).
If you wish to start your own group, first make sure there isn't one that already exists that's similar. Second, start a thread with a relevant name and then outline your plan in the first post.0 -
It sucks you feel that way... But I understand why they do it. If you are interested in what the group is doing start your own, or wait til another one is started. There's a ton of really helpful and motivated people on MFP that I'm sure would join yours!0

I'd like to think I am a fair person so I guess I can understand that there needs to be a separate groups section for this kind of stuff. I guess I took offence because to me, a forum is an open discussion board and there seems to be lots of things that are limiting members.
I think I can see both sides of the argument now but still think it is a bit of a shame.0
