This may sound like a silly question. I have heard lots of people (mostly female) telling others to drink water to reduce water weight and bloating. This method of drinking lots of water to reduce water weight seems a little odd to me. Does this usually work?

Yes, it does work. Basically, it's along the lines of the form of thinking with "starvation mode". When the body perceives it isn't getting enough (be it water or calories) then it will store some for use later when it thinks it won't be getting more. it's a safety mechanism built into the body to prevent or at least hold off death as long as possible. Eventually, lack of eating will lead to real starvation or lack of water intake will lead to dehydration, but for a little while the body will prevent it by holding on to what it can.0

Agreed with comment from tony. Sodium also plays apart in water retention. But no need to worry just keep drinking water and it will balance that out.0

This is what I found personally: when I was downing water continuously all day I was running to the bathroom every 45 minutes. I couldn't understand why I should be taking in all that water when all it does is make me pee more. I backed off some. I still keep a bottle of water with me but I drink when I'm thirsty.
My water retention issues went away when I gave up grain carbs and sugar carbs. Also no more issues with sodium causing water retention.0 -
I lost 3lbs in my 1st week by drinking nothing but water.. and the colder the water the more calories you burn..0
