White vs. Brown Rice

Good article on white vs. brown rice. I can attest, I eat white rice more days a week than not, and I'm dropping weight and having great workouts. This may not be the right choice for many, but if the shoe fits, you might consider it.

I eat a mix of the two but I didn't realise that brown rice caused problems with nutrient absorption. I actually feel better when I eat white rice. The higher fibre content in brown rice tends to disagree with my digestion.

Thanks for posting - interesting article.

The small differences between the 2 aren't enough to support which one is better. Personally I eat white rice because that's what I grew up on and it tastes better to me.

    This ^^

We rarely had rice when I was a child, but I eat brown rice because I prefer the taste.

While I agree with @ninerbuff, I just prefer brown rice since I can eat it cold out of the fridge.

I grew up on brown rice. That's what I use now, unless I'm trying to make sushi rolls. To me, it just has so much more flavor! (I haven't heard anything about the nutrient absorption thing other than a few allusions)

Edit: I looked at the article and still haven't seen anything meaningful (beyond "here's what we say") about nutrient absorption issues. Are there studies about this?

Plenty. Use Google and find. There's a ton of information on this issue. I eat white rice on training days. When mixed with plenty of protein and non-starchy veggies, it mitigates the white rice GI. I find it much easier to digest over brown rice.

Rice bran tastes good by itself and is the healthiest part.

I love white jasmine rice - sticky and delicious! When I go out to Thai or Indonesian restaurants I try to get forbidden rice because it's not something I cook at home.

I personally like brown rice over white, but recently switched to white because I heard about high levels of arsenic in rice. It is - overall - higher in most brands of brown rice. Although apparently arsenic is absorbed in a lot of our produce, I figured I'd rather have one less thing to worry about in terms of chemicals in my life!

Here is a (2012) chart breaking down the arsenic levels by rice type and brand, in case you're interested: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2012/11/arsenic-in-your-food/index.htm#chart

Meh, I like both and have had no issues. To each their own!

I don't really like either. My Mom used to buy Uncle Ben's or Minute Rice though, so perhaps that's why. I do love Chinese take-out white rice though. I will mow a pint of that down with pleasure. But I recently bought this Lundberg Wild Blend (in Shoprite) which has become my go to. It's so good.

I like white better than brown in some dishes but love the crunch of brown in others. I eat both but tend to eat more whole wheat pasta vs rice.

I'm thinking there's gotta be a market for rainbow rice, right?

You can always buy it online or at Whole Foods.

If you are talking about black rice, it's available at both my local chain grocery stores.

I only eat rice once or twice per week and I prefer brown...I only like white if it's with sushi and/or otherwise going to be slathered in soy sauce or something...otherwise, white rice tastes like nothingness.

My go to starch is a baked potato and I have one most nights...if not baked, roasted.

We actually have a HUGE Asian Supermarket in my town - the size of a Super Stop and Shop or Publix. I just don't buy it because my little one doesn't really like it, and I eat rice maybe once every few months.
