How to stop binging once you've grown accustomed to the pattern?

Ok sooooo I've lost 30-something pounds since January and I've fallen off the wagon a few times and apparently its happening again. Because I'm dumb and can't stop craving/eating everything in site. I have fresh fruit and lower carb/calorie things in the house but I just give in and get something really really unhealthy for me.

In the past 4-5 days I've eaten around a good 10,000 to 15,000 calories. And the scale is telling me I've gained 5 pounds because of it which isn't really shocking me at all. I know I'm going to gain, I just...I both don't want to stop (because I miss the food I'm eating) and desperately want to (because its very freeing to be in control of your own weight loss).

I don't know what to do right now, I just don't want to be back in the 170's.

Your answer is highlighted above. Why are you missing those foods? Your diet should be the same foods you've always eaten (because you always will, whether you want to eat "healthy" (whatever that is) or not.)

Eat whatever the hell you want.

    Just eat *less* of it.

I went from 8 tacos to 3, right? A whole pizza to 3 slices. The entire sleeve of cookies (20+??) to 6 ... but I'm still eating tacos and pizzas and cookies when I want.

I feel for you. I was (and still do at times) fall off the wagon in a bad way. The best you can do it find your triggers. Do not have these in the house-ever. I would find myself just eating out of a cereal box of bran wheat. If its all fiber it can't be too bad right? I would also notice it was when I was too tired. Have a coffee, go for a walk, go to bed early.
I'm trying to get back onto the wagon myself. I've started counting calories again, working on my meal plan before I get hungry and work from there. Make healthy substitutes of your favorites.

When you think you'll cave ask yourself, if this was a bag of broccoli would I be hungry enough to eat it?
Another thought is seeing a psychologist. Many with eating disorders have underlying problems that use food to mask.

I can't say I am good at this myself. I'm just restating the things I've learned to fix myself. I can't say I've done it all but depending on the severity you may need to go through the checklist.
    GOOD LUCK!

Have you tried eating the foods you love, but in moderation? Instead of low carb or low cal options, can you try to fit one portion of the cookies(or whatever the food is) into your day? If we feel deprived, then we're more likely to go binge.

    What the Sargent said.

Stop depriving yourself of foods you enjoy. Plan them ,in more reasonable amounts, into your daily meals. If you know you can have some every day you won't be as likely to need to scarf the entire carton of ice cream or box of cookies.

One of the reasons I started doing CICO was exactly because I do not have to give up enjoying things I like to eat. I also notice I enjoy my "junk foods" more now than I did when I just ate until I felt full. If I know I am wanting to have pizza this week, and I know I will want to eat 4-5 slices, I make sure to plan to enjoy it on a day when I will have lots of spare exercise calories so I can have a 900- 1,000 calorie meal. And then I don't worry myself too much about the 2 pound water weight gain I will inevitably have from all of the salt.

Loosing weight is not easy but to succeed you have to have a plan that does not make you miserable the whole time.

    This.

Also- start slow. In the past few days you've eaten 10,000 - 15,000 calories. That's a pretty substantial difference. Start by logging exactly what you're eating accurately. Crack out the food scale and measure portions. Do not cut food at all at first. Get the hang of measuring your food and see exactly what you're doing. Then, slowly, cut the portion size. You don't have to cut entire food groups or favorites. You can still eat whatever you want, just in more reasonable serving sizes.

It is also possible that you're eating emotionally. If you're eating 10,000 calories per day.. that's almost constant eating. It would take me all day to eat that much and I'd have to be eating almost constantly. Check your emotional health. You may have underlying things to work on that are preventing you from having a healthy relationship with food.

I also agree with the idea that you shouldn't be cutting out all "unhealthy" things. Yeah, I have plenty of fresh fruit and lower calorie things too, but I'm definitely going to eat ice cream tonight...just not the whole pint. And I'll make sure it fits within my calorie allotment. How much were you eating before the binge? Were you restricting yourself too much calorie-wise? Was there something specific that brought this one as well as the other times you started to fall off? If you can figure out what your triggers are, you may be able to shore yourself up against them next time.

Other than that, I don't think there's much anyone here can do for you. This is absolutely something that has to come from you. If you want it badly enough, you will get back on track.

Yep, definitely sounds like your diet is overly restrictive. Tell yourself you can't have something and you'll want it a whole lot more, we always want what we feel we can't have - it's human nature. Work into your diet the sort of food you're craving, eat it in moderation. That gain will be mainly water weight by the way, that'll go away soon enough.

    Moderation is the key OP.

Yes, yes, yes! Eat whatever you want, but less of it! It's taken me years and years and years to implement this mindset. I will never stop eating cheese, bread, or wine, but I don't have to eat a block of cheese, a loaf of bread, and a bottle of wine in one sitting. :)

I was the binge eating queen!

I just learned not to deprive myself. If you feel like something then have it but in moderation!! Still count the calories & ulter your meals around that for the day.

If I am craving bacon & eggs I have it but I poach the eggs & use short cut bacon & make sure I have some spinach & veg!

Also, I find if I do deprive myself then you get so hungry you don't care & just binge! So now I take a piece of fruit with me everywhere I go, try to have healthy snacks for at work or inbetween meals. This helps me stay satisfied enough to wait for my next planned healthy meal!

In short... Don't deprive yourself, balance & everything in moderation! If you slip up, it isn't the end.

Obviously I am no expert, this is just my personal experience.

    Best wishes!

Consistency is the difference. ANYONE can do something temporarily. Doing it forever is a different story. So you fell off the wagon a few times. Then get back to a regimen you can consistently keep that doesn't exceed how many calories you need to consume to maintain.

I am looking forward to 170. Here's some tips I put together.

It's a lot easier to move towards a positive target than to avoid a pitfall. Watch Canada's Worst Driver if you don't believe me. If you fill your days avoiding your favourite foods pretty soon that is all you will be thinking about.
