i just started a new lifting program (Jason Blahas Ice Cream Fitness). He recommends that during the 5x5 sets your rest periods be 5-7 min. Does anyone else do this or a similar program and really struggle with that long of a rest period? Would it negatively impact my results in a huge way if I only rested for say 2 min??? Thought fit friends?

I'm not familiar with the program. What type of lifts does it focus on?

generally you don't need to rest more than 5 minutes, if you have to rest more than 5 minutes you're using too much weight.

I just looked up the program. It seems decent, but it also seems like there's too much volume to me.

it suggests the following for rest periods, which seems about right to me:

"Break times between sets are 3-5 minutes for the 5×5 sets and 1-2 minutes for the 3×8 sets."

Here's what I would do. If you fail to hit 5 reps, then you need to rest 5 minutes. If you hit your five reps, then rest for 3.

That is what Stronglifts 5x5 suggests.

The 5x5 lift are the big lifts like squats, bench press, deadlifts etc. it's pretty similar to strong lifts and SS.

Why did you choose that program? It seems like it would take 2 hours to complete a workout....

It takes me about an hour maybe an hour and ten min with the 2 min rest period in the 5x5 and 1 min for the 3x8. Time is not really an issue for me. I don't lead a busy life haha. I chose it because I didn't feel like the other strength programs gave me enough. I know It's strictly psychological lol. I know every other program hits all the muscle groups but 3 moves just doesn't fill my workout appetite

It sounds like you're not lifting heavy enough then. You should need more than 2 minutes rest if you're focusing on strength. You also don't want to overtrain. While I doubt you'll over train on that program, more volume isn't always better.

I've only just started so I know I need heavier weights on a few lifts so I will see how heavier impacts my rest periods. I'm obviously gonna know on set 2 if I need to rest more when I've found the weight that challenges me for the 5 reps. I actually chose a 3 day program with the thinking that I would be less likely to over do it if I'm only lifting 3 days a week. I guess next week I will add weight and start off with 3 min and adjust accordingly.

If 5-7 minutes of rest is too long, up the weight. Then it won't be too long any more.

(or lower the rest period and keep the weight the same).

I do 3x5 ICF since I am on a 20% deficit, but I rest 2-3 minutes on the big lifts, depending on how difficult they feel. Maybe a little longer if I am really struggling. I rest 1-1:30 for the accessories. I only increase every couple of weeks, so usually I will rest at least 3 minutes the first time at a weight. Once I can easily get 3x5 with 2 minutes rest, I up the weight. YMMV.

I follow my assigned rest periods. Typically 3-5 minutes on the big three, but can be up to ten minutes if I'm max testing or working heavy singles. Accessories are typically 90 seconds.
