I've recently been diagnosed with hypo-thyroid in which my thyroid doesn't work properly which slows down my metabolism, making loosing weight a real struggle! It's been over two months now that I've been trying to loose weight and nothing's worked! Anyone else out there with the same problem? I need help/ideas/advice!

I have Hypothyroidism too. It's controlled with medication but I still find weight loss a real struggle. I'm determined to make this time work, I've just got to be patient I suppose. I've been sticking to 1500 calories per day and increasing exercise, I try to only eat some of the exercise calories back. I've got no advice though as I'm only down 2lbs in more than a month.

I have been hypo for 15 yrs or so. Biggest thing for me was balancing my thyroid hormones. I put weight on while doing an hour of aerobics and then running 3 miles. I ate the same as my room mate. She lost, I gained weight. Once I was diagnosed and we knew why I was gaining and losing hair and all, I was prescribed levothyroxin. I felt so much better after the first few weeks! Now I get tested yearly. I take synthroid daily and have for years. I rejoined MFP in Feb 11 lbs heavier than what I had been logged in at a year ago. This was not due to my thyroid, but having a third baby, very bad eating habits, high stress, and not exercising. Since then I have gone from 173 to 149. I still have a ways to go, but getting there. I eat around 1200, but always eat back my exercise calories. I measure my food and try to be as accurate as possible. I cut out soda, sweet tea, cafe mochas, chocolate (serious trigger food for me) and alcohol. I also cut back on sugar. I still eat it, but not daily! I do have days where I go over the 1200, but I don't sweat it or beat myself up. I just get back at the measuring and weighing. I usually work out 6 x a week really shaking it up with different workouts. I will bike, walk, run, hike (with my 3 yr old on my back), and do lots of different circuit training videos in my living room ( with my 3 kids playing or joining in). Weight training is REALLY important because having more muscle burns those calorie. Some weeks I only lose .5 lbs, some weeks 3 lbs and other weeks no loss but also no gain. It feels very slow sometimes, but DONT give up. It is possible!!!!

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease). I lost more slowly than most MFPers, so be patient! But I did it just like everybody else—by eating fewer calories than I burn.

I followed the advice in the Sexypants post: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1080242/a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants/p1

PS. MFP has a Hypothyroidism & Hyperthyroidism group: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/753-hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism
